Cobra King F7 One Length Irons Review

Cobra King F7 One Length Irons

Cobra Golf’s Bryson DeChambeau-inspired King F7 One Length irons are an interesting concept that make for an interesting option at all levels. With the idea that each club in the set is the same length, the game is simplified by only needing to use one swing throughout the whole set.

EDITOR’S NOTE: We posted this originally a LONG time ago, but given Bryson’s win at the Dubai Desert Classic last weekend, we thought we’d bring up the iron the iron that started it all for Bryson and Cobra.

First Impressions

When you first pick up the Cobra King F7 One Length irons, they don’t scream “Game Improvement” but they don’t exactly scream “Player’s” either. The King F7 falls somewhere right in the middle. The topline is a medium size, with a little hefty sole, and moderate offset. A slightly more compact head size than traditional GI irons give the King F7 a more appealing aesthetic. Longtime Cobra/Rickie fans will be able to find the orange and black color scheme on the Variable Length set. All in all, the King F7 is a good looking GI iron.

How Does it Feel?

These Cobra King F7 ONE LENGTH irons are some of the best feeling GI irons I’ve ever hit. Game Improvement irons often tend to feel empty, almost too forgiving, or like a small metal wood. The King F7 One Length has a large sweet spot but plenty of feedback to let you know how you hit your shot.

Another common characteristic of GI irons is their clunky, yet stable, turf interaction. The term “shovel” is often used to explain a GI iron because they are large and power through the turf to make contact. This can be helpful to a lesser skilled ball striker, but better players are looking for something a little more fluid. I thought the King F7 had a nice smooth feel through the turf, but there’s still a fair bit of stability to help those that need it. If you want something a little more on the solid side, I suggest checking out the Cobra F-Max irons.

How Does it Sound?

Much like the feel, the Cobra King F7 ONE LENGTH irons have an improved sound from most GI irons. I find most GI irons to sound like something between a loud drum and a sling shot. The King F7 has a more of a hard “whoosh” to it and there is sound variance based on where you hit the ball on the face. Also much like the feel, the sound through the turf is less thumpy than most GI irons and gives you more of a “ripping through” sound. Auditory feedback is one of the most impacting forms of feedback you get from the club. The King F7’s sound from a decent shot leaves you feeling confident and satisfied.

On-Course Performance

While single length iron sets isn’t a new concept, it’s certainly been refreshed in the golf world by DeChambeau. After playing variable length irons my whole life, there was definitely an adjustment period for me with the Cobra King F7 ONE LENGTH irons. Trust me, it’s weird to swing a pitching wedge, gap wedge, or sand wedge that’s the same length as your 6 iron. As a result, my swing felt more upright and I was hitting a lot really high shots with the higher lofted clubs. I also found I hit the longer irons (5-7) pretty high as well, but it wasn’t un-serviceable.

The biggest gain for me with the King F7 ONE LENGTH is that the King F7 isn’t inherently forgiving and the single length setup simplifies the game. Once I figured out the setup and a comfortable swing plane, finding the sweet spot of the club was very easy. The offset makes the King F7 a touch draw biased so hitting a draw was easy, but I still haven’t been able to figure out how to fade the ONE LENGTH irons yet. In my case, the simplification of “one swing” may be a little too oversimplified. If you aren’t concerned about shaping shots a ton and just want consistency, these irons are perfect.

Final Thoughts

I don’t necessarily think the single length iron concept is for everyone, but there is definitely value in it. I know a lot of people that struggle with their irons and consistency where a set of irons like the Cobra King F7 ONE LENGTH will pay dividends. One of my friends in particular was telling me the other day that he’s started choking up on all of his irons so they feel like they’re the same length and he just needs to repeat his swing no matter what club he hits. Sound familiar? He’s exactly the type of person these irons are perfect for. He wants to have a repeatable swing that he can use to hit all of his clubs and get a consistent shot with. Not only will this help him shoot better scores, but it’s also going to help him have more fun.

*It’s important to note that being properly fit for a ONE LENGTH iron set is key. You need to make sure you have the right length, lie, and swingweights to properly benefit from a single length iron set.
