Cobra King Pro Irons Review

This post was originally posted early last year.  Given Rickie Fowler’s win at the 2019 Waste Management Open, we thought we’d re-post the classic Cobra King Pro CB/MB irons – the predecessor to the irons Rickie used this past weekend.  Hopefully we’ll have his current irons up soon!

Cobra King Pro Irons

The Cobra King Pro irons are the “cool, Tour-level, not-for-the-average player” iron of the Cobra family. If they look familiar to you, it’s because you’ve seen them in the bag of a young Richard Fowler for the past two seasons. Not a fan of the black and orange finish? Cobra also offers these irons in a chrome finish. Note: the stock set is a cavity back/muscle back (CB/MB) setup, but custom combinations of CB and/or MB can be ordered.

First Impressions

Regardless of what kind of player you are, I challenge you to not be impressed when a box of these show up at your door. The black finish Cobra King Pro irons look amazing and the contrasting bright orange paint sets them off.

The King Pro’s head is one of the most compact in recent brand history and the thin profiles are perfect. From a traditionalist blade perspective, they King Pro has a rounder toe as well as “transition point” where the toe meets the topline. All in all, this is one serious looking golf club that sets up beautifully behind the ball. If you prefer to look at something with more offset and size, you will want to look elsewhere.

The Cobra King Pro irons are easily one of my favorite looking clubs in mainstream golf.

How Does it Feel?

You will have to be a strong ball striker to fully realize the benefits of the Cobra King Pro irons. One of those benefits is the feel. The CB version of the King Pro is firm in its feel and has a somewhat larger sweet spot. That firmer feel leads to greater responsiveness, but is still pure. Speaking of a pure feel, the King Pro MB irons are about as perfect as it gets. Though a slightly smaller sweet spot, catching one perfect with the MB feels so silky. If you’re a blade player, you know that silky feeling I’m referring to.

Player beware, both of these irons will make you pay for your misses. Shots on the toe and feel are rock hard and feel dead as can be. You won’t even need to look up to know you didn’t carry that water in front of you. Regardless, the Cobra King MB Pro irons have some of the most precise feel in this area of the market among major OEMs.

How Does it Sound?

With the CB portion of the Cobra King Pro irons, the sound is more solid than its shorter MB clubmates. A well-struck shot has that solid “thwap” letting you know you caught it perfect. The MB irons have a little softer tone that’s more of a muted “click.” These two tones are extremely satisfying and a perfect response from your club on a good shot. Of course, being a player’s club, the mishits will be less rewarding and match the feel of a poor shot as mentioned above. The easy solution to that? Practice a lot, get fit for the right clubs, and make sure you hit more good shots!

On-Course Performance

The only real “advanced” feature to the Cobra King Pro irons is the tungsten weight in the toe of the club. This tungsten weight (visible in pictures) moves the center of gravity (CG) of the club to the center of the face. Ideally, this makes for more precise shot making and playability. As mentioned numerous times by now, the King Pro MB is made for the better iron player. More average iron players looking for forgiveness and extra yardage are going to struggle. A strong shot maker will appreciate the precise, pure feel and the workability of the King Pro irons.

Final Thoughts

Admittedly, the Cobra King Pro irons are for the better player and not the average joe. I’m not saying you need to be a scratch handicap player, but you need to be a strong iron player. If you are a good iron player and are a blade player, then make sure you consider the King Pro irons. The King Pros easily hold up to all of their direct competitors, and even beat them in a few cases. For my money, the King Pro was one of the top three releases in its class.
