Winter Golf - Keep Playing

Winter Golf – Where Do You Draw The Line?

Well, we officially got our first Chicago blizzard to kick off another chilling Chicago winter, I can’t stop thinking about golf.  It seems that every winter, around February, the full-blown golf bug is back.  I constantly find myself yearning for the course, and trying to find a way to swing the sticks.  “Too cold for the range?  Is the indoor range that far?  Let me see if I can find someone up for simulator golf…”  I constantly have that stupid itch.

Then, a 40 degree, cloudy day shows up on the weather forecast.  Sure it’ll be 30 when I tee off, but it’ll be worth it….right?  For me, I’ve played golf in every winter condition possible.  Hell, Bill and I played in the Cog Hill Eskimo Open, teeing off in single digit weather, snow on the ground, and greens harder than the cart path.

But since that day, I’ve had to draw a line somewhere.  If there’s snow on the ground, I’m probably out (especially this much snow, it’s impossible).  I’ll go find a simulator. Whipping winds about 20-30 mph?  Probably going to stay home, nobody wants that frustration anyways (unless you’re playing some links golf in the UK).  For me, if I have to take my winter coat on and off for shots, I’m probably not going to play.  (Remember, I’m from California, I’m bad at winter.)

Winter Golf Blizzard

Realistically, if it’s above 40 with minimal wind, I’m in.  Rain isn’t an issue (and usually just an excuse to try some new rain gear out), and I have no problem playing in it.  Snow is a no-go except on a rare occasion.  However, as I sit here writing this, I’m looking at the low-30’s and cloudy/rainy forecast for next weekend, wondering if A) the course will be open, B) will this foot of snow melt in time, and C) who is going to be crazy enough to play with me.  The answer?  Probably Bill if he isn’t already on the course.
