Shot Scope V2 Golf Watch Review

Shot Scope V2 Golf Watch

Let’s embrace some of the coolest golf technology with the Shot Scope V2 golf watch!  Shot Scope’s new GPS-enabled golf watch automatically tracks each shot you take while helping you navigate any golf course with ease.  The V2 provides 100+ points of data that lets you take a deep dive into your own game.  Shot Scope’s easy to read and accurate data can help you understand your game like never before.

Out of the Box

Setting up your Shot Scope V2 does take a bit of planning at the start.  The first thing you need to do is setup the mobile app and start downloading courses.  You can do it via desktop too, but it has to be done manually.  Not like any of this is hard, but Shot Scope is not yet fully “plug and play.”

New users are provided with easy to follow directions, and the app and desktop site are simple to navigate.  I consider this a HUGE positive because I’ve seen many golf apps that can get tricky.  Think about it, unless you’re a huge player in the golf world, you’re not going to have a room full of software engineers building the next Instagram.  Shot Scope has intuitive and rich features, and I appreciate that.

Next up is to screw the sensors into your grips.  Each club has its own unique sensor.  Even the putter!  Not too tough – easy on, easy off.   If you change your bag like a true Driving Range Hero, ease of swapping is crucial if you want the true immersive Shot Scope experience.

On-Course 2

On-Course Performance

Ok, so once the balls are in the air, you’re relying on the Shot Scope V2 to get you around the course with a variety of accurate data points.  You’re getting the basics – front, middle and back distances are displayed in bold, readable numbers.  It’s one button push away to scroll to whatever hole you want distances for (it does read what hole you’re on automatically though), and you can get your distances to hazards and layups too.

This watch gives you all the stuff you need, and really nothing that you don’t.  Buttons are responsive and easy to push, and most importantly, won’t get bumped accidentally like a lot of other sport watches do.  While there’s no touch screen, that’s part of the deal with Shot Scope – keep it simple.  Sure, we’re not getting color images or full  hole maps, but let’s be honest – those are luxury items.  You have the bare minimum of what you need which certainly keeps the cost of the watch down.  If that’s what you prefer, however, expect to pay $100-150 more at the least for those options.

Accuracy and Other Notable Features

I consider my 9 iron the “standard” measurement of distance due to it’s incredible consistency.  Based off my trusty 9 iron, I feel really good about the accuracy of the numbers from the Shot Scope V2.  I did some cross checking with my laser, and even my trusty old GPS watch, and numbers were just about spot on.  Unfortunately, you can’t see how far you hit balls (until you’re reviewing after) so you’ll need to keep your eye on the ball.  (Like if you know you hit your 3 wood 240, you can consult your GPS and start your search in that general range.)

One last notable feature that I love is that the V2 auto detects being on the putting green.  The sensors record every contact with the ball, even subtle putts.  You simply hole out, click how many putts you took while standing over the hole, and it records the pin position.  Very cool!

Let’s Dig Into the Numbers!

After a brief post-round upload, you’re about to get served a big, heaping bowl of golf reality.  Do you really want to know all your stats?  Of course you do!  Shot Scope V2 gives you all of it and you can’t hide.  In my eyes, this is the true highlight of the V2 experience.  You’re getting a long list of data that overviews not only your current round, but will compile years worth of golf shots.

Let’s get granular.  We’re talking about data from club distances, driving, approaches, short game, and putting.  This info gives you the insight to make serious improvements.  Shot Scope claims their tools can help you lower your handicap by as much as 2.7 strokes!

A couple standouts of the nearly 100 data points ShotScope V2 collects:

  • Average distance for each club – lets you know whether you should hit that 7 iron or that 8 iron into that island green…
  • Club usage – are you getting yourself into play more with your 3 wood or driver?
  • You can even track exactly how many GIR you’re hitting with each individual iron, PLUS your average proximity to the hole!

Final Thoughts – Shot Scope V2

There’s a lot going on here, and after only a few rounds with the Shot Scope V2, you’ll start to discover some truths about your golf game.  All this data might convince you to take different strategies on the course, and hopefully will result in some lower scores.  Who doesn’t like to see that?  It’s now up to you to take the info the Shot Scope V2 is giving you and make yourself a better golfer!
