ASICS Gel-Core Duo Boa Shoe Review

ASICS Gel-Core Duo Boa

The team at ASICS athletic shoes partnered up with Srixon Golf to bring us their first ever golf lineup – the ASICS Gel-Core Duo Boa and the Gel Course Glide.  Combining the comfort and performance of ASICS shoes with the innovation and golf knowledge of the Srixon team, ASICS put together one great golf shoe.  So, let’s dive into the more tech-packed option of the two, the ASICS Gel-Core Duo Boa.

The Looks

The new ASICS Gel-Core Duo Boa look exactly like a pair of ASICS trainers, just with golf spikes.  I mean, if it isn’t broke, don’t fix it, right?  ASICS has been making quality training/running shoes for years, so they had a strong foundation to build off of.  The Gel-Core Duo Boa are a classic looking shoe, that features the typical ASICS four line pattern on the side of the shoe with their logo on the heel.  They’re a very clean looking and minimalist golf shoe that give you the look of wearing a casual running shoe on the course.  The boa lace system just outside of the tongue is the only indicator that may make you realize this is definitely a golf shoe.

Comfort Level

I’ve had a few pairs of ASICS running shoes before, and they’ve all been extremely comfortable.  I wouldn’t expect anything less from their golf line, and boy, they did not disappoint.  As soon as I slipped on the ASICS Gel-Core Duo Boa, my first thought was “Wow, these things are comfy…like, real comfy.”  They might be some of the most comfortable golf shoes I’ve ever put on.  The ankle support is sturdy, with a good amount of cushion, so I’m confident I won’t easily roll an ankle while hunting for my ball in the woods.  Yet while the shoe is sturdy enough, it’s also flexible enough for appropriate ankle movement during my swing, while walking, etc…

The ASICS Gel makes the shoe feel super soft on the bottom of the foot, and is what drives that comfort in the shoe.  The FlyteFoam sole also make the shoe really light for a golf shoe.  Put those together, and you have that extreme comfort you’d expect from an ASICS shoe.

On-Course Performance

I’ll break down the ASICS Gel-Core Duo Boa into a few areas.   The first is stability.  A golf shoe must have good grip into the grass and keep me stable throughout my swing.  Check that box for the Gel-Core Duo Boa.  The seven spike pattern on the bottom grips the turf very well, and combined with the ankle cushion/stability, were great during and swing.

The next piece is long-term comfort and breathability.  For me this is a big one, as some shoes start out comfortable, but my dogs are barking at the end of the round because the materials don’t hold up and they can’t breathe.  Then my feet are swollen and nobody is happy.  The Gel-Core Duo Boa does a very good job of breathing during the round so my feet don’t overheat.

One thing I always worry about with Boa lacing systems is that they tend to loosen during the round, and I constantly have to re-tighten them.  With the Gel-Core Duo Boa, they stayed fairly tight over the course of 18 holes.  I didn’t find myself constantly reaching down to tighten them.  Big plus.  They’re one of the better Boa systems I’ve come across in a golf shoe.

Final Thoughts -ASICS Gel-Core Duo Boa

Typically, I like a flashier golf shoe, so when I initially opened the ASICS Gel-Core Duo Boa, I didn’t know how I’d like them.  However, the Gel-Core Duo Boa are so dang comfortable and perform so well, I’ll be happy to wear them when I play.  If you appreciate the style of ASICS shoes, you’ll definitely want to see the comfort and stability they can bring to your game.  Your feet will be thanking you for it.
