From the Putter Archives: The Scott Readman Concepts Putter That Started It All For Me

My History with Scott Readman Concepts

It’s well documented on this site that I am a big supporter of Scott Readman Concepts.  Whether it’s the content we’ve created or the actual gear in my bag, I’ve spoken highly of their company and their equipment many a time.  I first started working with them back around 2014 at my old golf site after stumbling across their website in the golf forums.  The gear looked great and their general vibe from the UK was cool.  I started with a review of some of their headcovers, but a short time later they sent me my first Scott Readman Concepts putter.  That putter was the Scott Readman Concepts SWC named after Sir Winston Churchill.

I’ll be honest, I thought the putter looked a little funny.  The putter was unique and head and neck were just something I wasn’t used to.  Keeping an open mind, I put the putter in my bag and set off for Sand Valley for the first time in 2015.  Little did I know that this trip would be key in me getting to know and becoming quite close to the Scott Readman Concepts team and their families over the years.  This putter started it all!

Getting to Know the SWC Putter

My original SWC putter was a big eye-opening experience for me.  I thought this was one of the weirdest looking blade putters I’d ever seen and just not my style.  Thank god I kept an open mind…  Within a few holes at Sand Valley, I realized it was something special.  I ended up benching my big time Scotty Cameron Tour putter and put the SWC in my bag for the near future.

After about a year of playing that putter, I ended up going over to England for work.  On that trip, I made my way down to Bristol and spent a few days with the SRC team.  While this trip sent me home with a prototype SWC putter head, I also got to start working on my own custom version of the same model.  (As seen in my SWC review linked in the beginning of this post.)  I would make a few more trips over the next year or so and “we” eventually finished the putter.  Not only did I get a sweet putter out of it, but I also got to spend a lot of time with some great people.

That custom putter stayed in my bag, more or less, for a long time until I got a different SRC putter.  To this day it still regularly rotates in for play.  Simply put, I think it’s one of the best putters out there.  Of course, I accept that putter preferences are significantly subjective, but my feelings stay the same.

Final Thoughts – My First Scott Readman Concepts Putter

Look, I love my Scott Readman Concepts SWC putters.  They feel amazing and are just so pure.  They’re also extremely unique and unlike anything else you’ll see out there these days.  But that’s not the point here.  The point is that while this is legitimately a great putter, I likely wouldn’t be as good of friends and all in on Scott Readman Concepts if this putter never came into my life.  It’s not just a putter, it’s “a nostalgic reminder of my dear friends”.  This putter gave us something to talk about and learn about a lot of weird commonalities between us.  Like my family origins are just down the road from them.  I mean like my family members are buried right around the corner.

So that’s my interesting story about a seemingly random putter around my basement.  Though I don’t really give it a ton of attention these days, it has a cool history to it that I thought was worth telling.  Sitting around my house has helped me rediscover some cool gear in my “archives” and this is one of my favorites.  I’d highly recommend checking one out.  You wouldn’t be the first person I’ve converted!
