Cobra King Speedzone Hybrid
Hot. Rocket launcher. Forgiving. Monster. Those are some of the words I’d use to describe the Cobra King Speedzone hybrid. Utilizing a lot of the same technology as the Speedzone fairway wood, the Speedzone hybrid is long and easy to launch in the air. If you’re a player that prefers their hybrid to fit more of a mini fairway wood role in your bag, you’ll want to learn more about this club.
The Looks
The first thing you will notice is that, yes, the Cobra King Speedzone is a slightly on the larger size for a hybrid. I would say it’s fair to put this club in the “mini fairway wood” category in terms of profile. This larger footprint inspires confidence behind the ball but also plays a role in making the club more forgiving and easier launching. The face depth is also somewhat mid-range with a smooth transition from the black face into the matte black crown. Flip the club over and you’ll find the familiar Baffler Rails and a red sole weight to position the center of gravity (CG) low and back in the head.
How Does it Feel?
Cobra used a higher strength forged stainless steel face in the Speedzone hybrid to not only make it stronger, but to promote faster ball speeds and to help with the launch. All I can say is that it does actually feel like the ball seriously jumps off of the face at impact. Also, the face is fairly forgiving as you venture away from the center. Some of this is because of the low and back CG, but the hollow Split Rails play a huge role in this feeling. In fact, by making the rails hollow, the Baffler Rails are able to flex more which increases the hot spot on the face. Cobra claims the hot spot to be 70% larger (!) because of this design choice. While I can’t prove that number scientifically, I will agree that the face is certainly hot.
You can’t talk about a Cobra hybrid with Baffler Rails without talking about turf interaction! The functional reason for Cobra’s Baffler rail system is to make the club more efficient through the turf. What these rails do is glide through the turf so the face stays more level with the ball for cleaner contact. The result is crisp contact and better response from the face. Don’t get me wrong, they won’t save you from a super steep swing straight down into the ground behind the ball, but they will make a big difference when you take a shallow divot, hit out of the rough, or maybe need to launch a long one out of a fairway bunker.
How Does it Sound?
The combination of the titanium face and larger body give the Cobra King Speedzone a somewhat metallic sound. While not quite the emphatic whap of a full-sized fairway wood, the Speedzone hybrid has a soft metal “tick” to it at impact and across most of the face. Due to the Baffler Rail system, the turf interaction sounds are pretty minimal. Most reasonable shots will leave you with a pretty clean “whoosh” through the turf both in the short stuff and the rough.
On-Course Performance
Man, does the Cobra King Speedzone hybrid JUMP! Not only does it absolutely fly, but it’s extremely easy to get airborne and sailing straight. This is exactly what this club is designed to do. With the CG low and back in a larger head, you should be able to easily launch the ball and get enough spin to hold the ball in the air with good carry and a soft landing. The Baffler Rails help the club track squarely through the turf promoting a shot that will stay on its line. You still have to put the club face on the correct line, but that’s up to you and your swing. In my opinion, the Speedzone hybrid THRIVES off of the tee or on long second shots where you need to find the fairway with easy distance.
COBRA CONNECT – Powered by Arccos
Cobra continues to implement its COBRA CONNECT technology in stock grips across its club lineup. This technology gives you seamless integration with Arccos platforms throughout the entire bag to automatically track your stats on a mobile device during a round of golf. With this data, you’ll be able to better understand the strengths and weaknesses of your game making your practice sessions more efficient. Not only that, the same data will help you make better decisions when it comes to equipment selection or setup. I’ve found COBRA CONNECT to be very useful and a nice added bonus to Cobra equipment since they’ve rolled it out across the board.

Final Thoughts – Cobra King Speedzone Hybrid
For players that want forgiveness and to fill a distance between their longest iron and shortest fairway wood, the Cobra King Speedzone hybrid is a great option. It’s extremely easy to launch and the ball just flies. Players that like to play a more finesse shot in this area of their bag may prefer to play something like the King Utility iron. But if you like the look of a larger hybrid and want something both long and forgiving, the Speedzone hybrid certainly fits the bill.
