Tour Edge Exotics E722 Irons Review

Tour Edge Exotics E722 Irons

With two irons to choose from in Tour Edge’s premium lineup, the Tour Edge Exotics E722 irons are the option designed for high launch, forgiveness, and extreme distance. Technologies such as Diamond Face VFT and Dual Vibrcor, amongst others, make the E722 iron an amateur-friendly and tremendously forgiving iron for a wide range of players. If long and straight are what you’re looking for, definitely read the rest of this review.

The Looks

As an extreme game improvement (GI) iron, there are certain characteristics one should expect in the Tour Edge Exotics E722 irons’ appearance. First, there is a noticeable offset which has a very purposeful function. This helps players close the club face at impact to avoid a big slice. For players that this club is geared toward, this will go a long way in keeping shots on target, and more importantly…in play. The E722 also has a thicker top line. This accommodates the 360º undercut design and Dual Vibrcor material in the head. More on that later. Generally speaking, the E722 has an ultra clean, GI iron profile.

Feel 6

How Does it Feel?

Diamond Face VFT is a technology Tour Edge uses to make the face of the club  more active and the sweet spot more generous. This is achieved by placing a pattern of diamond shapes behind the face, each varying in size. The “VFT” in the name stands for “Variable Face Thickness”. Those diamonds act as mini trampolines so there’s more spring to the face at impact. That concept also makes the sweet spot larger so you don’t have to be in the dead center of the face for maximum distance. As such, you can really feel the ball jump off of the E722 irons’ face and there’s more than a little wiggle room from the center.

Tour Edge also extended the sweet spot of the club by adding more weight at the toe. This pulls mass away from the heel/hosel and places more weight in the toe are from sole to top line. By placing more weight here, not only is the iron more generous, but it’s also more balanced and feels easier to keep square through impact.

In order to give the E722 irons more feedback, Tour Edge dampens the feel with their Dual Vibrcor material. This material is a TPU that fills the 360º undercut pocket. Without this material, the E722 irons would feel (and sound) more like a hollow metalwood. Instead, the E722 irons have an extremely clean and active feel that provides precise feedback so you know exactly where you hit the ball on the face.

How Does it Sound?

The combination of the 360º undercut design and Dual Vibrcor play a large role in the Tour Edge E722 irons’ sound. Like I mentioned above, without Vibrcor, the E722 would feel like a metalwood. The sound would be pretty metallic and “tingy” as well. BUT, the Dual Vibrcor dampens up the sound to give a lively “whap”. Don’t get me wrong, it’s not going to sound like a razor thin forged blade, but it’s tight and appropriate for a GI iron.

Since the E722 is a club geared toward extreme game improvement, it has a slightly thicker sole. It’s not too meaty whatsoever, but it’s in line with a club of this category. There’s a slight bevel to the leading and trailing edges which allows for the club to cut through the turf a bit smoother. The end result is moderate “thump” with a hint of “sweep” on most swings unless you’re chopping down trees.

On-Course Performance

The Tour Edge Exotics E722 irons are designed to get up in the air and go a long way, and boy, do they sure do that. With a low center of gravity (CG), the ball naturally wants to get up in the air faster. While that’s really helpful in this category of golf club, you still want to avoid ballooning. Tour Edge helps with this through “power lofting” the set. This means each club has a slightly stronger loft than it might normally, but will essentially be easier to hit. In short, the 7 iron might have a 5.5-6 iron loft, but will still play as easy as a 7 iron normally would. Of course, the generous forgiveness built into these clubs will make the long irons easier to hit than your typical irons.

Back to that 360º undercut design I keep bringing up. As noted above, this acts sort of like a hinge at contact creating more face flex. More face flex means more speed. More speed equals longer distance. Put that together with Diamond Face VFT and the ball really goes. While I’m certainly not who this club is geared toward, I was seeing significant distance increase from club to club. For instance, I was hitting the 6 iron around 220 yards consistently. I don’t hit 6 irons that far… Where this really stands out is on mishits. These undeserving shots had much less punishment than I’m used to and still managed to get up and go pretty well.

Final Thoughts – Tour Edge Exotics E722 Irons

If you’re looking for really easy distance and a ton of forgiveness in a premium package, the Tour Edge E722 irons certainly deliver. A lot of tried and true technology went into these clubs and the end result is impressive. I was a big fan of the “competitive-spec” C722 irons, but I genuinely think the E722 is the real star in this part of the family. The E722 irons legitimately excel in every category for this corner of the market and are a great value when compared to its competitors.
