OnCore 2022 Elixr Golf Ball

OnCore Golf has surged onto the scene as one of the top affordable golf ball options in the market. With premium designs at a fraction of the cost of the major brands, OnCore has quickly become a fan favorite, largely due to its Elixr golf ball. The new OnCore 2022 Elixr ball has a three-piece construction and a perimeter weighting just like the original, but features an updated polybutadiene core for higher ball speeds and pure feel.

How Does it Feel?

I’d put the OnCore 2022 Elixr right in that “Goldilocks’ area for feel. That makes plenty expected sense as it’s a mid-compression ball with a firmer outer layer. The dimple pattern now features 350 dimples, up from 318 in the previous model. Does this impact the feel in addition to the performance? I’m not totally sure, but it’s worth pointing out changes to the cover of the ball as we dive into the next sections.

Off the Tee

The new enhanced polybutadiene core OnCore used on the ’22 Elixr is designed for higher ball speeds which means greater distance. I have a higher swing speed so I use a generally firmer ball, but the Elixr still performed well off the tee for me and felt good. I wouldn’t describe it as a “hard distance” ball, but it’s firm enough to give me the control I need with enough feedback. While players seeking a true distance ball off of the tee may prefer something firmer, the Elixr is a good tee ball for a wider range of players. A sort of “one size fits all” off the tee, if you will.

In terms of distance, the Elixr’s firmer cover jumps nicely and I got the full distances I expect off of a driver. The Elixr navigated the wind well and was also easy to keep in play on the lines I set the ball on. My big misses were 100% my fault and not because of the golf ball.

On the Approach

Approach shots are where the OnCore 2022 Elixr really jumped out for me. This is where I found the combination of feel and control to be the best. The ball was easy to compress so distance and spin were good, but it didn’t get so spinny that I couldn’t control the ball. It responded to the exact shots I was looking to hit (flighting up or down, shaping left or right, etc) and proved dependable from top to bottom. When compared to the more expensive premium OnCore Vero X1, I much preferred the Elixr into the green.

Around the Green

I found the OnCore 2022 Elixr to play on the softer side on and around the greens. The ball by no means feels “puffy” or “marshmallowy” but it doesn’t feel firm either. There’s plenty of response whether a wedge shot from the rough or a knee-knocking 8-foot putt. On wedge shots specifically, I felt like I could really squeeze the ball and get plenty of bite out of it. There’s good grip from the cover to generate enough check when you need it. For putting, the ball rolls true and is easy to control with plenty of response on the face without feeling clicky.

Like most golf balls around the green, the ’22 Elixir will be fairly subjective. That said, it performs really well as a mid-compression golf ball.

Final Thoughts – OnCore 2022 Elixr Golf Ball

Golf balls ultimately tend to be pretty subjective and once people develop a favorite, they become fiercely loyal. That doesn’t mean there isn’t an opportunity for players to have their eyes opened to something new. The recent years have brought many new options to the market at a more affordable price point, and brands like OnCore are making solid cases to play their ball at a fraction of the cost. The OnCore 2022 Elixir is a versatile ball that can appeal to a wide range of players and it’s $30 price tag is easy on the wallet in a world of soaring golf ball prices.
