Callaway Mack Daddy Forged Wedge Review

Callaway Mack Daddy Forged Wedge

The Callaway Mack Daddy Forged wedge is a tour-proven shape that meets the demands of Callaway’s Tour players with a premium forged design.  Callaway’s made some great progress in the wedge department since the introduction of the Mack Daddy brand, but the Mack Daddy Forged is far and away their best version yet in terms of feel and performance for the better players.  Players can choose from a satin chrome finish or a black slate option.  Both versions come with the versatile R grind crescent shaped sole.

First Impressions

Two words that immediately come to mind for the Callaway Mack Daddy Forged wedge are “clean” and “classic.”  I think the back of the club has a little more modern look with the four “dots” and the laser-etched graphics, however, at address the club is a classic wedge.  Players that have become familiar with the Mack Daddy wedge shape over the past few years will be pleased with how the club looks.

How Does it Feel?

Being this is the first time the Callaway Mack Daddy wedges are forged, there’s a very noticeable difference in the feel.  Previous Mack Daddy wedges had a slightly airy feel to them, though still precise but the Forged is crisp.  All of that precision is much more amplified and the feedback is greatly improved.  Don’t mistake this for saying the wedge doesn’t feel soft.  A good forged carbon club should have a certain level of sweetness to it and the Mack Daddy Forged certainly does.  No, I’m not ready to brand it “buttery” but we’re close.

How Does it Sound?

Callaway‘s forged design gives the Mack Daddy Forged a crisp but soft “click” on well-hit pitch or chip shot.  Full shots have a slightly more tearing sound to them as you attack the ball.  It’s worth noting that the chrome finish is a little more muted than the black slate finish.  The black slate is a more “raw” finish so that certainly does make a slight impact on its tone.

On-Course Performance

From a performance perspective, the biggest advantage (for me) in the new Callaway Mack Daddy Forged wedge came from the improved feel.  Let’s face it, with a clutch scoring club you need to have good touch and that’s heavily reliant on feel.  Of course, the feel is worthless if the sole grind and other fitting characteristics are wrong for you.  Callaway used the versatile R grind sole to give players more shot options.  This design gives you the ability to hit different chips and pitches from all sorts of lies while still being comfortable with a full shot.

Another key performance factor is the 16 groove face.  To help players get more spin, Callaway added a 16th groove on the face near the leading edge.  Is this going to make the Average Joe that most of us are a ball zipping machine?  Of course not, but it does help a bit to soften approaches both short and long.

Final Thoughts

The Callaway Mack Daddy Forged wedge doesn’t have any fancy bells and whistles, but it’s a straightforward classic forged wedge.  This wedge is a strong option for the player that puts a premium on feel in their short game.  In addition to great feel, the R grind sole gives stronger players versatility in green-side shot options.  So if you’re a player that has a strong wedge game, make sure the Mack Daddy Forged is on your radar when it’s time to replace your old wedges.
