Cobra LTDx Irons

Let’s be honest, half of the fun with golf equipment is its cool factor. The other half is the actual quality of the product. In the case of the Cobra LTDx irons, they just so happen to do both very well. Strong technology and design, such as PWR-COR technology, make the LTDx irons a really impressive game improvement iron accompanied by really good looks. If long, straight, and forgiving are what you’re looking for in an iron, this review is for you.

The Looks

Being a game improve (GI) option, the Cobra LTDx irons do have a slightly thicker topline and noticeable offset. This should be expected, but doesn’t mean it can’t be executed with some smooth blending. The body of the iron flows nicely into the hosel with a fairly moderate profile. I won’t try to convince you the LTDx has a compact silhouette, but it’s far from massive. I’d say it comfortably fits in the “player’s distance” category in terms of head size.

Cobra really did a good job with the fine details of the LTDx irons’ fit and finish. My favorite touch is the “rougher” finish from the groove area of the face extending around the topline as seen from address. I can’t speak for everyone, but I like how this framed the ball, especially as a player who tends to address the ball a little too close to the heel. The rear of the club just looks modern and cool. Although it’s only cosmetic, the carbon fiber Cobra badge is a nice touch. I also really like the general aesthetic of the club’s “pad” featuring the PWR-COR bar. More on that bar later.

How Does it Feel?

The Cobra LTDx is a hollow-body iron filled with a soft polymer that allows the club face to flex while also dampening sound and feel. As such, the sweet spot feels very generous with a lot of life. The ball absolutely jumps off of the face and has a super clean feel. If you like that active, springy feel in your irons, the LTDx certainly delivers on that.

Suspended in that soft polymer injection is the PWR-COR bar. PWR-COR is essentially a steel bar that adds weight low in the head directly behind the hitting zone. This positions the center of gravity (CG) to help get the ball in the air easier with more power, but by keeping the bar suspended in the polymer rather than having it “attached”, the face is able to flex more creating more speed and life at contact. In short, there are real CG gains, but the head/face aren’t rigid because of the steel bar “floats” in the polymer.

Lastly, the LTDx irons have a pretty clean turf interaction. The soles aren’t super thin, but they aren’t thick and they have a nice bevel on each side to reduce friction through the turf. As a result, the turf interaction feels smooth and glides nicely. Heavier shots thump a little more and the sole will bail you out a little bit, but not as much as a wider sole would. While that may be less beneficial for higher-handicaps that tend to dig, it’s nice for players that want more playability in their irons. Aka, more versatile and better for shot shaping.

How Does it Sound?

Hollow-body/injection-filled irons tend to have a very specific sound to them. Don’t get me wrong, they will vary slightly from brand to brand, model to model, but it’s unique and very definitive. The Cobra LTDx iron is no different. Rather than the usual “whack” you get from a solid forged iron, it’s more of a “whap” at impact. One of the major points of these injections is to dampen sound, which some do better than others, but Cobra does a pretty good job with it. The LTDx iron’s sound is a soft, fairly mellow, “thwap”. That smooth sole we discussed in the Feel section has a clean “whisp” through the turf. Overall, it’s a calm and clean tone that’s very pleasant for an injection-filled iron.

On-Course Performance

Most GI irons are designed to be fairly “anti-right” and will have a built-in draw bias. For some people, that’s perfectly fine. It provides a major area of assistance that their game needs. But there are also players that look for the forgiveness, distance, and ease of play in a GI iron without a draw bias. I found that to be the case with the Cobra LTDx irons and I really appreciated that. The screw you see in the toe of the club (pictured above) adds extra weight to this portion of the club. This essentially serves two purposes, and one of those is preventing the club face from shutting as quick so the stock shot is straighter. I felt this allowed me to be more consistent with my targets as well as shaping the ball both directions.

The second purpose that toe screw makes is that it extends the sweet spot. By adding weight in the toe, it draws the CG away from the hosel/heel essentially creating better balance in the club. By making the “strike zone” more generous, of course, this will lead to better distance and control. Additionally, the lower CG from the PWR-COR technology makes the ball get up in the air much easier which helped a lot with carry. This combined with the increased face flex I mentioned in the Feel section led to pretty big distance. Add in some slight power lofting and the LTDx irons are certainly long and powerful.

Final Thoughts – Cobra LTDx Irons

As far as game improvement irons go, the Cobra LTDx irons are a really strong option. I’m a big fan of the more neutral ball flight along with the clean feel and easy distance. Every time I addressed the ball, I felt confident that I would be able to hit any shot to its full potential. Or in other words, I could just “grip it and rip it” with a long, soaring result. If I needed to shape my shot either direction, flight it up or down, that’s in there too. The LTDx irons really do everything well and address a wide range of players looking to make their iron game a little bit easier.
