OnCore Vero X2 Golf Ball

OnCore Golf has established a strong following because of solid golf balls at affordable prices. The Elixr model specifically has established a devoted following as a result of its versatility and accessible price point. For more advanced players seeking premium performance that stacks up to their big name competitors, OnCore has their Vero X line. The new OnCore Vero X2 is a four-piece ball designed for players with faster swing speeds (110+ mph) that also want good greenside control.

How Does it Feel?

Generally speaking, the OnCore Vero X2 feels pretty similar to the Vero X1. “Firm, but not too clicky throughout the bag” is a fair and accurate assessment of this 95-compression golf ball. I’ll go into more detail throughout the review, but I found the Vero X2 to have many of the feel characteristics of modern distance golf balls. Definitely not a marshmallow and a solid profile at higher impacts.

Off the Tee

In my opinion, the OnCore Vero X2 is significantly improved from the Vero X1 off the tee if you have a higher swing speed. With a roughly 115 mph driver speed, this made a massive difference for me. OnCore implements something they call “perimeter weighting”. This is designed to reduce side spin on the ball so it will manage the wind better. My testing just so happened to take place on a quite breezy day and the Vero X2 notably impressed me with its wind interaction. Don’t get me wrong, I wasn’t playing in any gales, but enough where the wind could have given me real troubles. Instead, I was able to keep the ball under control with minimal impact into head and crosswinds.

On the Approach

As a distance ball, the OnCore Vero X2 is naturally going to be a touch firmer. It takes a bit more to compress the ball. I wasn’t zipping the ball back 30 feet on a string, but I did find I could stop the ball just fine. Thanks to the same properties mentioned in the section above, wind management was also strong with irons. This made the ball consistent and reliable in hitting targets throughout a blustery round. Rest assured, if you’re a shaper of the golf ball, you’ll still be able to do so just fine.

Around the Green

On and around the greens with the OnCore Vero X2 were two different experiences for me. OnCore designed the Vero X2 to have high spin around the green so that even though the big power hitters want a solid ball, they can still work some magic with their wedges. I have to say, I was really impressed with how the Vero X2 responded with greenside wedge shots. Hop and stops were routine, and I was even able to peel a few short chips and pitches back a few feet. So credit where credit is due, the OnCore Vero X2 really stood out to me for its quality wedge play.

Part of the magic in the Vero X2’s design is that it has a thin urethane cover. I imagine the thinner cover allows the club to interact with the core(s) of the golf ball rather than absorbing too much of the impact. So, it’s pretty intuitive to assume a distance ball with a thin cover will have a firmer feel off the putter. I feel that’s a pretty accurate description of the Vero X2. It’s responsive with precise feedback, but definitely not on the softer/puffy side when putting. (Don’t act like you don’t know what I mean when I say “puffy” when it comes to putting!) It’s plenty usable, just a firm putting golf ball.

Final Thoughts – OnCore Vero X2 Golf Ball

I’ll be interested to see what kind of adoption the OnCore Vero X2 has this season. By offering a firmer option than the Vero X1, I feel like OnCore has genuinely produced a better ball for higher swing speeds than they were previously. I would go so far as to say that the Vero X2 sort of “unlocked” the Vero design for me. My experience with the X1 was fine enough, but within only a few holes, I was like “ohhhh, I get it now.” The Vero X2 was a much better fit for my higher swing speed and I saw improvements across every category compared to the X1. Of course, that’s one golfer’s experience. Certainly give them a shot for yourself and see which Vero model works best for your game!
