Callaway Mack Daddy 4 Wedge
Callaway continues their evolution of the Mack Daddy wedge family. The latest model is the Mack Daddy 4. With new “groove-in-groove” technology, a new X-grind option, and different finishes – including the Tactical option pictured here – the Mack Daddy 4 is worthy of its name.
The Looks
Overall, the Callaway Mack Daddy 4 wedge has a familiar look to previous Mack Daddy iterations. The head shape is a more compact “Tour-proven” profile with a medium topline and crisp leading edge. As far as finishes, the Mack Daddy 4 comes in four different options. Raw, chrome, matte black, and the new Limited Edition Tactical finish. I must admit, the new limited edition Tactical finish is pretty slick. The olive green with the simple black paintfill is perfect. I’m pretty proud of these pictures and they don’t do the finish near the justice it deserves.
Oh! I nearly forgot! The Mack Daddy 4 Tactical wedges also come with a sweet black with green label, Tour Issue, True Temper Dynamic Gold shaft! A perfect touch.
How Does it Feel?
There’s a new trend I’m noticing across the industry in wedges. I’m not an exceptional wedge player that gets a ton of bite, but I’ve noticed recent wedge models across the board have felt very “grippy.” With the Callaway Mack Daddy 4 wedges, it’s like you can feel the face grabbing the ball and spinning it. Note: in big fluffy sand and thick rough, you won’t notice this nearly as much as when you’re making cleaner contact. I have to think the major reason for this notable “grip” is the use of micro-grooves in between the bigger grooves of the face. These extra grooves create 84 contact points which should help give you more spin as well.
In terms of the basic feel characteristics, the Mack Daddy 4 is very responsive and solid. There isn’t as much click as the Mack Daddy Forged, but you get great feedback in your hands. I’m hesitant to use the descriptor “buttery” but the Mack Daddy 4 has an overall smooth feel.
How Does it Sound?
Much like I mentioned in the Feel section, the Callaway Mack Daddy 4 isn’t clicky, but still has a firmness to it for great response. The Mack Daddy 4’s sound follows suit. On full shots, the Mack Daddy 4 has kind of a “pop” to its sound. It’s the combination of the sound from impact and the pop through the turf. A clean chip or pitch starts to lean a little more toward a “click” but with a little more breath to it. (Trust me, that statement makes sense if you try it.)
It’s worth noting that the different finishes may have an impact on the overall sound. The raw wedges will tend to have a sharper sound. The plated finishes, like chrome, will be a little more muted in sound.
On-Course Performance
“Tried and true” is somewhat cliché but it’s a great way to describe the Callaway Mack Daddy 4 wedge. There aren’t a bunch of bells and whistles with crazy technology. What you get is a solid wedge design that’s versatile and reliable. That said, there is one “whistle” I’ve already mentioned – the groove-in-groove technology. These micro-grooves help give a little extra grip for when you need the extra bite on the green. As said before, it’s most noticeable when you have a clean look at the ball. These extra grooves won’t necessarily make you start pulling the string on the ball, but you could find yourself getting a little more check than you’re used to. For someone like me, that’s a big win.
Most of the Mack Daddy 4’s performance is going to come from getting the correct sole grind for your game. Throughout the loft range, there are four different options. The S, W, C, and the new X-Grind. The X-Grind is high bounce, narrow, and the low point is closer to the front. Callaway says this is intended for the player with a moderate-to-steep angle of attack and medium/soft course conditions (which sounds good for Chicago munis!).
Final Thoughts
With plenty of options from sole grinds to finishes, Callaway surely has something for everyone in the Mack Daddy 4 wedge lineup. As long as you have the sole grinds that are right for your game, this latest Mack Daddy wedge will be a real performer. Average wedge players will get along well with the Mack Daddy 4, but the strong wedge players are going to be deadly with them. The groove-in-groove face gives a nice gain in performance and the feel is nothing short of exceptional.
