2024 What's in the Bag: Sun Mountain Mid-Stripe Ace 5

Sun Mountain Mid-Stripe Ace Stand Bag Review

Sun Mountain Mid-Stripe Ace Stand Bag

In the ever-evolving world of golf bags, the Sun Mountain Mid-Stripe Ace stand bag stands out as a unique blend of timeless aesthetics and modern functionality. This carry bag caters to golfers who prioritize style without sacrificing practicality on the course. If you loved the vibes of the original Sun Mountain Mid-Stripe stand bag like I did, but it was a bit big or heavy for you, the new Mid-Stripe Ace comes in a smaller profile and weighs a half pound less. Trust me when I say that it makes a HUGE difference in this bag.

The Looks

There’s just something killer about the looks of these Sun Mountain Mid-Stripe bags. When the line was first released in 2023, along with matching accessories and the Boston bag, it was love at first sight for me. The Sun Mountain Mid-Stripe Ace captures that traditional retro vibe while still maintaining a contemporary visual appeal that feels right at home in 2024. While some golfers might prefer the lightweight modern fabrics, vinyl offers a certain old-school charm and a distinct advantage in terms of durability and weather resistance, especially for golfers who play frequently and expose their bags to the elements. My original Mid-Stripe bag has held up perfectly all the way until receiving this bag so I’m positive the new Ace will have just as much longevity.

There are eight different colorways featuring a clean silhouette accentuated by a prominent central stripe. While the collection features multiple bold colorways, the timeless elegance of the all black really caught my eye. I feel like it screams luxury and sophistication like a high-end piece of designer luggage. You can even get your initials engraved on the chrome plate by the valuables pocket!

Design & Features

Despite its classic exterior, the Sun Mountain Mid-Stripe Ace incorporates several features designed to enhance the golfer’s experience. The 4-way top divider keeps clubs organized and easily accessible. Speaking of the 4-way top, the Mid-Stripe Ace has a 7.5-inch top, down from 9 inches in the original version. Though a smaller top, managing your clubs is still plenty easy. Additionally, the built-in handle on the top facilitates convenient grabbing and lifting of the bag.

For storage, the Mid-Stripe Ace offers a plethora of pockets to accommodate all of your golfing essentials. There’s a dedicated hydration pouch, while the stacked velour-lined valuables pockets provide a secure haven for your phone, wallet, and/or keys. There’s also a velour-lined magnetic-sealing pocket on the spine that’s perfect for quick access to a rangefinder so you don’t have to deal with a dangling case. I personally still use this pocket for tees, but I really like having a non-zipper pocket here!

There a two major sources of convenience with the Mid-Stripe Ace stand bag that have become absolute favorite features for me. First, there are two small metal rings on either side of the bag’s spine handle. These have served as a great place to clip my towel or rangefinder to keep the larger ring on the side of bag less cluttered. Next is the removable single shoulder strap. More often than not, I use a push cart and the shoulder straps are unnecessary. I can easily take the strap off of the bag before my round making for a much cleaner experience. Furthermore, if I’m going to carry my bag, I can swap in my dual-strap from my original Mid-Stripe bag. Which I’ve done and I love it.

On-Course Performance

I know it’s only roughly half of a pound lighter in weight, but I feel like it made a WORLD of difference in the Sun Mountain Mid-Stripe Ace. Weighing in at this lighter weight, the Mid-Stripe Ace felt much more manageable to me. Carrying it was much more comfortable, even with the single strap. Sure, there are lighter stand bags out there, but I never felt like the Ace was a burden to carry. The built-in top and integrated pocket handles make lifting the bag in and out of your car nice and easy as well. In short, I feel the Mid-Stripe Ace is a better “grab and go” stand bag option than its predecessor.

Utilizing all of the Mid-Stripe Ace’s features is smooth and effortless on the course. The Ace’s sturdy stand system deploys easily, providing excellent stability throughout your round on any lie. The pockets are well placed and convenient to access whether standing on the ground, on your push cart, or the back of a motorized cart.
