Cobra Aerojet Fairway Wood Review

Cobra Aerojet Fairway Wood

In the quest for longer distance and more forgiving fairway woods, Cobra Golf developed the Aerojet line of woods. The Cobra Aerojet fairway wood is designed to cater to a wide range of golfers, from beginners seeking forgiveness to more experienced players looking to squeeze extra yards off the tee. Better players with higher ball speeds seeking low launch and spin may consider the Aerojet LS (low spin). Players seeking maximum launch and a draw bias may be more interested in the Aerojet MAX. These days, my game called for the standard Aerojet so that’s what we’ll be covering in this review.

The Looks

Most “middle ground” fairway woods tend to have a moderate rounder shape. I find the Cobra Aerojet fairway wood to have a more sleek profile that leans close to a “player’s” look. The top features a glossy carbon finish highlighting the lightweight crown which plays a large role in the club’s design. Around the rear perimeter are some white and blue accents to give the crown a little extra character. While not a deal breaker, I think this club would look really sharp without those lines. (Like the Cobra Darkspeed crown! They look amazing.)

Flip the club over and you’ll quickly notice the suspended PWR-Bridge weight technology. This visible weight sits behind the face, separated from the crown, and is designed to contribute to both flexibility and a lower center of gravity (CG). This makes ball speeds faster, the club more forgiving, and provides easier launch. More on that later.

How Does it Feel?

Cobra did a really good job finding a strong blend of solid feel and life in the face with the Aerojet fairway wood. What I mean is that the response at impact is very firm, but you also get a sensation of power like the ball is jumping. I attribute this to two things. First is the updated H.O.T. (Highly Optimized Topology) Face which features varying thicknesses across the face to make the face more efficient wherever you strike the ball. Second is the aforementioned PWR-Bridge combined with the PWRSHELL face. The forged PWRSHELL face allows for optimal face flex and the PWR-Bridge helps make it so that its flex is unrestricted. The resulting feel is neither overly harsh nor mushy, providing a great balance of feedback and forgiveness.

There’s also a fixed rear weight in the sole. It’s fixed in the sense that you can’t move the CG in the head like the other two models. However, you can swap it out for different weights to alter your total headweight. This rear position makes the Aerojet fairway wood feel more balanced and controllable throughout the swing.

How Does it Sound?

The sound of the Cobra Aerojet fairway wood is pretty close to perfect. At least in my opinion, and based on what I look for in a fairway wood. It’s not loud, but there’s a definite sense of assurance in a well struck shot. I would describe it as a firm, muted, and tight “thwack” with a good snap to it when you find the center of the face. The sweet spot is somewhat generous, but shots that deviate get a little looser and flat in their sound. This fairway wood has a nice crisp tone that’s really “top of class”.

Admittedly, I had to put a non-stock shaft in the Cobra Aerojet fairway wood to get it dialed in. (I went with a Fujikura Ventus TR Blue if you’re wondering.) Once I did that, I really came to appreciate the Aerojet fairway wood pretty quickly. Like I said in the “Looks” section, I found it to be a great combination of a “player’s” and “every man” fairway wood. I thought this held true in its performance as well. It wasn’t “hard to hit” (I’m not sure I’m ready to call it forgiving yet…), launch was easy, and I was getting unreal distance. BUT, I was also able to shape and flight my shots as needed. Personally, I don’t find this level of versatility all that common in “middle ground” fairway wood offerings. So this was quite the pleasant surprise.

I want to focus on that “easy to launch” comment above. Having a lower CG thanks to the PWR-Bridge and sole weight combined with the carbon head, the Aerojet fairway wood naturally wants to get the ball off of the ground and soaring. Now, one might assume this means the ball could easily balloon and cost you total distance. I suppose that’s possible with the wrong shaft, but I found the flight to be piercing and powerful with a nice rise to it. This is very much a result of the PWR-Bridge placing some extra weight in the sole near the face. By placing a concentration of mass in this location, the trajectory and spin are more optimal and you get a really nice ball flight.

Final Thoughts – Cobra Aerojet Fairway Wood

Though the Cobra Aerojet fairway wood is an older model at this point, it’s still a quite impressive piece of equipment. I recently started tinkering with a fairway wood change because I wasn’t consistently hitting my gamer well. It’s important to note that there’s nothing wrong with my gamer fairway wood; my inconsistency is entirely my fault. In fact, I still consider it one to be one of the best fairway wood combinations I’ve ever used. I just needed to see something different for right now.

My third swing with the Aerojet/Ventus TR combo produced a Tour-like bullet with a 275-yard carry and the slightest light fade. The feel, the sound, the distance…it had my attention. I won’t claim that every shot was of that caliber, I was getting a flight and dispersion more in line with what I’ve been looking for. It was certainly enough to earn the Aerojet fairway wood a little bag time.

While I by no means know if the Aerojet will be my go-to fairway wood forever, I’ve been very impressed with it thus far. It offers a combination of distance, forgiveness, and accuracy that would benefit a wide range of golfers. The feel is excellent, and the club looks great at address. Cobra’s design team really deserves recognition for crafting a truly impressive fairway wood.
