Astral Putter Review
Buying a new putter can often be a gamble. You roll a few on the shop carpet, maybe sink one, and suddenly you’re convincing yourself (and your wallet) that this is the one. A few rounds later, its collecting dust in the garage. Astral Putters was started with a simple idea: what if you could have one putter that adapts and can change to your stroke, not the other way around? The team at Astral has built a truly customizable putter from head shape, face material and hosel orientation. The 360º rotating neck isn’t just a gimmick, it’s the heart of their system. It allows golfers to mix and match toe hang, lie angle, and shaft offset with ease. The Astral putter is for the tinkerers, the experimenters, and anyone whose ever thought, “there has to be a better way.”
The Looks
Astral Putters walk that perfect line between traditional and modern. The Astral blade putter has a compact, confident shape with a subtle curve that frames the ball beautifully. The full mallet is big enough to feel stable, but not so chunky it looks like you strapped a frying pan to the shaft. Both heads are cleanly finished with sharp milling and no silly paint jobs or distracting alignment marks. The copper-face option gives off a soft warm glow like an old coin that’s aged just right. The brass face pops a little more in the sunlight, with a touch of flash, but still classy. At address, both look fantastic. The putters sit square, frame the ball naturally, and doesn’t give you anything to second guess. The all black shaft marries perfectly with the black heads for a seamless silhouette.
How Does it Feel?
Feel is where the Astral putters really sets themselves apart, and not just because of the copper and brass face options. The copper face felt smooth as butter. The ball seems to melt off it which great for those who like as softer touch. I found brass to play a little firmer and give a nice crisp feedback in your hands. And because of the 360º neck, you can create any combo of toe hang or offset. The beauty of this putter is how you can make it feel exactly the way you want. During my fitting with Astral founder, Blake Callaway, we played around with hosel positions, lie angles, and face inserts to find that ideal spot.
How Does it Sound?
The sounds of the Astral putters will differ depending on your face material. The copper face gives off a soft, muted tock – satisfying, quiet and buttery. It’s the kind of sound that tells your hands, “yeah, that was center contact.” The brass face is distinctly different with a little more of a crisp, higher pitched click. It’s not loud or harsh, just a clean, confident sound that provides instant audible feedback. Regardless of your configuration of head and face combo, the sound stays consistent.
On-Course Performance
This is where all that tinkering and fitting paid off. I took both the Astral heads to the course for an extensive day of testing where I swapped between heads and face inserts to see what played the best for me. The mallet felt like an unfair advantage inside of 10 feet. It was so stable and easy to consistently square up. I found myself standing over short putts expecting to make them every time. The blade gave me a little more finesse from distance. I felt like I could really dial in my pace and trust the line. After all was said and done, I landed on the blade with the brass face for a firmer feel and the most feedback in my hands.
