PXG Mustang ZT Putter Review

PXG Mustang ZT Putter

The putter market has been dominated recently by high-MOI mallets and unique zero-torque designs, but what if you prefer the look of a blade? Options have been somewhat limited as this trend rapidly grows. Enter the PXG Mustang ZT Putter, the newest addition to PXG’s Zero Torque (ZT) lineup. This club is designed to deliver mallet-level stability in a modified blade profile, making it an intriguing option for golfers who struggle with face rotation but crave a more traditional aesthetic at address.

The Looks

The PXG Mustang ZT takes the classic Anser-style blade shape and gives it a modern makeover. Featuring subtle mini-wings or bumpers that flare out slightly at the heel and toe, it’s certainly a departure from a classic blade. This design adds mass to the perimeter for enhanced stability without creating an overly large footprint.

At address, the aesthetic is clean, black, and confident. The crucial element, the patented S-Hosel, is what gives it the Zero Torque properties, yet PXG has managed to integrate it so it looks much more conventional than many other low-torque offerings. For a high-tech stability putter, it keeps things remarkably uncluttered from at address. It’s a successful blend of high-MOI performance hidden within a familiar blade-ish body.

Feel 12

How Does it Feel?

The PXG Mustang ZT putter delivers a unique feel. Obviously feel and sound are fairly closely tied together, but PXG claims the Mustang ZT has the soft sound of an insert with the responsiveness of a milled face. Logic may tell you that seems impossible, but by golly, they did it. Its hollow-body design and S-COR polymer fill creates a firm enough feel for precise feedback, but soft enough that the face has a certain sweetness to it. PXG’s Pyramid Face pattern adds consistency and expands the sweet spot across the face.

The high-MOI design gives the putter impressive stability and balance through the stroke. PXG’s patented S-Hosel helps by positioning the shaft axis just above the center of gravity (CG), reducing torque and keeping the face square. The stock Slant 1.5 R grip enhances that stability with its slightly oversized, rectangular shape that limits wrist action. It does have a rectangular shape which took a little getting used to. The grip also adds about 1º of forward press to aid in the putter’s design. Switching to a different grip option removes that forward press and adds about 1º of dynamic loft.

How Does it Sound?

Muted and satisfying at impact, the PXG Mustang ZT’s sound reflects the previously mentioned feel perfectly. Its hollow 303 stainless steel body is packed with PXG’s S-COR polymer, which bonds to the ultra-thin face to dampen the tone. The result is a solid, mid-pitched “tock” that’s somewhat reflective of an insert, but with a little more crispness to it.

On-Course Performance

PXG’s “Zero Torque” concept delivers in the Mustang ZT. For a blade-style head, the stability through the stroke is impressive. The face-balanced setup and forward center of gravity keep the head tracking straight and help produce a quick, tight roll off the face. Head weight also plays a big role in control, and PXG gives you some flexibility here. Interchangeable sole weights let you dial it from 350 to 385 grams depending on preferences. With the Mustang ZT dialed in, I quickly built confidence over short and mid-length putts. Dare I say, accuracy and distance control seemed almost automatic.

Final Thoughts – PXG Mustang ZT Putter

High MOI and blade design rarely go hand in hand, but that’s what makes the PXG Mustang ZT stand out. The S-Hosel simply works in keeping the head steady and square through the putting stroke. Combined with adjustable weights, the Pyramid Face, and a high-MOI design, the Mustang ZT delivers mallet-like stability in a blade profile without feeling gimmicky.

For golfers who prefer a non-mallet look but want help keeping the face square, this putter is a strong option. It feels good, rolls true, and performs consistently on putts of all lengths.
