Project X HZRDUS Gen 5 Black Golf Shaft Review

Project X HZRDUS Gen 5 Black

Project X’s HZRDUS Black series has earned a reputation among better players for low launch, low spin, and extreme stability off the tee. The Project X HZRDUS Gen 5 Black continues that tradition, bringing new materials and a refined profile to one of the most successful shaft lines of the past decade. Powered by a 4D Optimized Carbon weave that’s strategically placed to improve torsional resistance and energy transfer, this shaft aims to deliver stability, efficiency, and a penetrating ball flight for players with aggressive swings.

The Looks

True to form, the Project X Gen 5 Black leans into a minimalist and stealthy aesthetic. The matte black finish and simple graphics are purposeful rather than flashy. A kind of look that speaks to performance-driven players instead of style-first golfers. Its understated design prevents distractions and pairs well with most modern driver and fairway wood heads. Even without bold colors or oversized branding, it sends a clear message: focus on function over flair. The visible weave around the mid section is a nice touch giving the shaft a little extra character. I especially like how it pops behind the HZRDUS wordmark graphic.

Feel 8

How Does it Feel?

One of the most notable aspects of the Project X Gen 5 Black is how it feels compared with its HZRDUS predecessors. While still on the firmer side, as you’d expect from a shaft designed for fast, aggressive tempo swings, the addition of 4D Optimized Carbon helps it feel smoother through transition and into impact. It also adds a bit more precision and character than earlier HZRDUS Black versions, giving the shaft slightly more life in the hands without changing its overall profile.

Feedback at impact is solid and controlled, and the shaft maintains the stable predictability that the HZRDUS Black line is known for. I also found the handle section to feel a little less “dead” compared to previous HZRDUS Black models while still being firm, and a little more action toward the top of the mid section.

For whatever reason, my swing has been producing a little higher launch and a bit of extra spin than normal. To be fair, I’ve sort of seen this trending over the past year so it may be something I need to look into a bit, but I digress… All that said, the Project X HZRDUS Gen 5 Black did a pretty good job in containing that for me. When I went for my PXG Lightning driver fitting, it was the only shaft that remotely controlled my launch and spin into a consistent, relatively optimized shot. As I’ve spent more time with the shaft, I’ve been able to consistently produce a penetrating, controlled ball flight that rolls out nicely.

The improved feel also made it easier to manipulate shots. Whether I was adjusting trajectory or trying to shape the ball either direction, it felt like less of a battle than with previous HZRDUS Black shafts. That added confidence went a long way on the course, especially on days when my swing wasn’t dialed and I just needed to find a playable shot.

Final Thoughts – Project X HZRDUS Gen 5 Black Golf Shaft

The Project X HZRDUS Gen 5 Black feels like a thoughtful evolution rather than a dramatic overhaul. It still rewards speed and commitment, but the added refinement in feel makes it easier to trust on the course. For me, it struck a nice balance between stability and usability, and it never felt like I had to fight the shaft to produce a playable shot. Compared to earlier HZRDUS Black versions, the Gen 5 Black feels more cooperative without losing its controlled, low-launch identity, which made it easier to stay confident whether I was swinging freely or just trying to manage my way around the course.
