LAB Golf OZ.1i HS Putter Review

LAB Golf OZ.1i HS Putter

Where do I even begin with this review? This obviously wasn’t my first foray into LAB Golf putters, and the DF3 even surprisingly cemented the spot as first backup. Then I reviewed the OZ.1i in both the regular “shaft lean” and 0º lean options, and while I was impressed and found them much more visually appealing, they just never quite clicked for me. Of course, it’s worth mentioning that I very much loved my gamer putter and anything overtaking was always going to be a tremendous hurdle to leap. However, after numerous recreational trips to the golf store…you know the ones, where you roll a million putts with different putters and meticulously comb through the used racks…I found something that kept drawing me to the LAB Golf OZ.1i HS putter.

Surely there wasn’t really anything special about this putter. It must be the usual “golf store putting greens are funneled to hoe more putts.” Or, LAB was obviously just trying to shut up all the traditionalists complaining about all of their putters looking too whacky, right? Wrong. LAB’s first ever heel-shafted putter featuring their Lie Angle Balance technology is indeed special. Very special, in fact, and it’s the most excited and confident I’ve been in putting for awhile.

The Looks

Broad appeal for the LAB Golf OZ.1 stems from a familiar “half-moon” mallet shape merged with modern, geometric lines. Opting for the heel-shafted OZ.1i HS further leans into a traditional look at address. LAB defines the neck as a “riser,” offering both 0° and 2° lean options to accommodate different visual and stroke preferences. Personally, I went with the 2º riser so the shaft would press a little forward and the face would line up to my eye better.

Custom builds provide a wide range of aesthetic combinations. Beyond the two riser colors, options include eight head colors and numerous alignment marks for the topline and flange. I saw a friend’s blue OZ.1 last season and thought it looked amazing, so that’s what I chose this time around. The blue really pops, even if not exactly on the traditional side, and offers a sharp contrast against a black riser and shaft.

And of course, let’s not forget the unique appearance of the signature LAB weights in the sole. Though they serve a very functional purpose in feel and performance, they certainly provide a unique look to any LAB putter. If you go with a “stock” option, they are only available in black and what LAB calls the D-0 alignment mark.

LAB OZ.1i HS Feel & Feedback

High levels of balance are a given with LAB Golf at this point, and whether you buy into the “zero torque putter culture” or not, there’s no arguing that these putters are exceptionally stable. I have used plenty of high-MOI mallets, and the OZ.1 is noticeably quieter through the stroke. Even in this heel-shafted configuration, the head stays confidently steady, making it easy to repeat your motion without having to fight the putting stroke.

Integrating a stainless steel insert provides a firmer, more precise response than the standard non-insert aluminum bodies found in other LAB models. This feedback feels consistent across most of the face and offers a clear sense of control. The result is a repeatable, highly balanced feel that amplifies the feedback without feeling overly harsh thanks for the fly-milled face.

One technical hurdle for LAB newcomers is the combination of the forward shaft lean and their Press grip. Because the shaft enters the grip at an angle, it can feel visually foreign during the initial setup. However, this geometry actually allows the stroke to function naturally; you don’t have to manually accommodate the press angle to keep the face square. Once you adjust to the visual, the hand position feels intuitive and easy to repeat.

How Does the LAB OZ.1i HS Sound?

The stainless steel insert makes a significant impact on the OZ.1i HS’s sound compared to LAB’s other full aluminum-body putters. It’s definitely a firmer, more direct sound, but a medium-depth fly milling definitely softens it up so it isn’t harsh or clicky. I don’t like to throw this term around loosely, but it produces a very distinct “tock” on any shot within the steel insert. Extreme mishits will have a little more vibration and a thinner, clicky tone, especially if you’re starting to get away from the insert.

On-Course Performance

Like I keep saying in my LAB putter reviews, they seemingly “do a lot of the work for you.” I’ll admit that I was somewhat skeptical about the heel shafted OZ.1i when they were first announced. I just didn’t think it would really be possible to achieve the same level of stability with a heel shaft position as opposed to the center position that sits comfortably behind the topline. That center position with the Lie Angle Balance and shaft lean seemed like the magic sauce to me. However, as I mentioned from those numerous golf store trips, I quickly realized I was wrong.

In fact, I found this new orientation easier to aim and the putting stroke felt just as stable, so my accuracy was strong and distance control was reliably consistent. Even with the heel shaft position, the head doesn’t want to twist or fall open during the stroke. It maintains that square relationship to your path effortlessly, which is a massive benefit on those 5 to 10-footers where you might typically feel the need to “guide” the face. The result is the clean look of a smaller heel-shafted mallet combined with the rock-solid stability of a high-MOI design.

Final Thoughts – LAB Golf OZ.1i HS Putter

It’s rare for a piece of equipment to go from “skeptical curiosity” to a “permanent bag fixture” as quickly as the LAB Golf OZ.1i HS did for me. While the brand has always offered a mechanical advantage (in my opinion), this is the first time they have packaged that performance in a way that feels completely natural to my eyes and hands. By removing the visual distractions often associated with zero-torque designs, the heel-shafted configuration leaves you with a clean look and a stable stroke.

Unseating a trusted gamer is a high bar, but the gained confidence I received from this putter made the decision simple. If you have avoided LAB Golf putters due to their unconventional aesthetics, the OZ.1i HS might be the bridge that finally connects traditional looks with modern stability. It’s easily the most comfortable I’ve been with one of their putters thus far.
