L.A.B. Golf VZN.1i Putter
I know I’ve said this before, but the L.A.B. Golf VZN.1i might be the brand’s best mallet shape yet. While previous models were built to perfect the stroke through Lie Angle Balance and zero-torque stability, the VZN.1i is engineered specifically to eliminate the most common cause of missed putts: poor aim. By utilizing a six-sided head shape and a system of integrated perpendicular and parallel lines, the VZN.1i creates a “visual grid” that helps lock your aim to the target. Add in the wide offering of alignment aid options and there’s no excuse for not finding something that fits your eye! This approach moves beyond simple sight lines, using the putter’s physical 3D geometry to ensure your perception of square perfectly matches the face at address.
The Looks
At address, the L.A.B. Golf VZN.1i bridges the gap between the brand’s unconventional past and a modern, refined mallet. The open-center design and rear bar work to frame the ball functioning as a built-in guide for the eye. Rather than relying on a rounded mallet shape, which can sometimes obscure where the face is pointed, the VZN.1i uses its geometry to create distinct visual references. These perpendicular and parallel lines act as a sight system, making it immediate and obvious if your face is square or misaligned at setup. Personally, I really like how this sits behind the ball and if L.A.B. ever figures out how to heel shaft one of these, my OZ.1i HS might be in trouble.
That last sentence should lead you to understand that the VZN.1i is currently only available in a center shaft configuration. You can get the VZN.1i with either 0º or 1.5º of shaft lean – whichever fits your eye and putting stroke better. I’m personally a big fan of the shaft lean option with these new-age zero torque putters! Additionally, if you go the custom route, there is a wide range of alignment aid options, eight different finishes, and three head weight options to tailor the putter to your exact preferences.
L.A.B. Golf VZN.1i Feel & Feedback
Given the stainless steel flymilled face, I expected the L.A.B. Golf VZN.1i to provide a firmer sensation at impact. Instead, the feedback is pleasantly soft while still remaining precise and direct. You get clear communication through the hands, which is helpful for gauging distance, but it lacks the harsh jarring feeling often associated with raw steel.
For my testing, I opted for the heavier head weight option. Adding this extra mass creates a substantial, locked-in sensation through the stroke. When combined with the inherent stability of the zero torque “Lie Angle Balance” design, this weight helps the putter feel immune to twisting. It allows me to make a confident pass at the ball, knowing the head is going to track exactly on my line.
How Does the L.A.B. Golf VZN.1i Sound?
While the L.A.B. Golf VZN.1i features a stainless steel face like other recent L.A.B. models, I found the sound to be noticeably softer. It’s quieter overall, producing a smooth “pick” sensation at impact rather than a sharp “click.” (That’s not to say previous models are “clicky,” I just found the VZN.1i softer than those.) It’s a consistent, low-pitched profile that feels tuned to be unobtrusive. On more aggressive strikes, the feedback shifts to a satisfying “tock” that confirms a solid connection, but it stays firmly away from harsher tones that can sometimes accompany stainless steel. This shift toward a more muted volume seems to be a product of the VZN.1i’s unique body construction.
On-Course Performance
The L.A.B. Golf VZN.1i is straightforward to transition into. I found that adjusting to speed control took almost no time, likely aided by my familiarity with the stainless steel face found on other L.A.B. models. More importantly, locking onto my target line felt automatic. Historically, I have found the “onset” shaft location behind the topline, when combined with shaft lean, to be an unnatural view. However, I didn’t seem to be bothered by that with VZN head shape. Beyond the visuals, the performance is consistent and reliable. The putter feels incredibly stable through the stroke, which made it easy to keep things quiet and smooth.
Final Thoughts – L.A.B. Golf VZN.1i Putter
The L.A.B. Golf VZN.1i combines the company’s proven Lie Angle Balance technology with what I believe to be its most visually approachable mallet shape to date. Throughout my testing, it delivered the same stable, repeatable performance I’ve come to expect from L.A.B. Golf while presenting a cleaner, more refined look at address. For golfers who have been interested in L.A.B. Golf but haven’t connected with the appearance of its previous mallets, the VZN.1i may be the model that finally changes that.
