Cobra Fly-Z Pro Irons Review

Cobra Fly-Z Pro Irons

The Cobra Fly-Z Pro irons are a precision-forged iron, that uses strategically placed tungsten weights to optimize the center of gravity.  If you’re a strong ball striker looking for great feel and workability, the Fly-Z Pro irons are a great option.  Maybe most importantly, Rickie Fowler used the Fly-Z Pro en route to his victory at The Players in 2015.

First Impressions

My first impression of the Cobra Fly-Z Pro irons was that they look essentially like a re-badged version of the Amp Cell Pro.  The shape and the cavities look identical.  The only real differences in looks comes from some minor branding changes and a tungsten plug.  The stock setup is a combo set made up of double cavity backs through 6 iron, single cavity through 8, and muscle back through PW.  Overall, the Fly-Z Pro irons look really clean with thin soles, medium-ish toplines, and a compact size.  If you want a player’s iron that sets up great behind the ball, then the Fly-Z Pro irons are for you.

How Does it Feel?

Compared to other forged player’s irons, the Cobra Fly-Z Pro irons have a slightly softer and more forgiving feel.  The tungsten weight is designed to center the CG in the face and increased the size of the sweet spot.  Now, don’t get me wrong, these irons didn’t all of the sudden turn into Game Improvement irons. They do, however, feel a little more forgiving with their sweet spots.  Well-struck shots have a crisp clip through the turf.  Just like any great high-end forged iron should, the Fly-Z Pro is super responsive and precise.

How Does it Sound?

A nicely pured shot with the Cobra Fly-Z Pro irons has a nice, solid “whip-pop” sound to them.  If you want the full effect, make sure you really pronounce the “H” when you say “whip-pop.” Players who want that signature sound of a forged iron will be extremely satisfied with the Fly-z Pro.

With that being said, if you’re going to bag The Fly-Z Pro, you better have some ball-striking game.  If you can’t hit the sweet spot consistently, these past two sections don’t even matter.  Struggling to find the center of the face is going to result in a dead sound.  Additionally, you can expect the stinging feel and poor performance to match.

On-Course Performance

The Cobra Fly-Z Pro has a lot of performance similarities to the Amp Cell Pro.  The longer irons will give you a touch more forgiveness with the tungsten plug addition.  You should also find getting the ball in the air a little easier for the same reason.  The shorter muscle backs are easy to shape and get creative with in scoring positions.  From a control perspective, the Cobra Fly-Z Pro is excellent and will work well for the strong shot maker.  If your iron game isn’t a strong suit, you may want to look at something more forgiving.

Final Thoughts

The Cobra Fly-Z Pro irons are great if you’re a good ball striker, plain and simple.  From a workability and feel perspective, they were as good as any other blade on the market.  As great as the Fly-Z pro irons are, they were a stepping stone to the best Cobra iron to date – the Cobra King Pro irons.  You can find a review of the King Pro irons here.
