Breakthrough Golf Technology Stability Putter Shaft
Barney Adams founded Adams Golf which blew up after the wildly successful Adams Tight Lies fairway wood. With a knack for innovating and identifying needs within the golf industry, Adams launched a new company called Breakthrough Golf Technology. BGT’s first product is the Stability putter shaft which has steadily been turning heads on Tour and among amateurs. This shaft was designed with the idea that putter shafts have not evolved at the same rate as the highly advanced, high performance putter heads players are using today.
The Looks
It’s rare to make this comment about a putter shaft, but the Breakthrough Golf Technology Stability putter visually stands out compared to the usual shiny stainless steel. The Stability features a thicker black carbon fiber portion with simple blue and white branding and no taper to the shaft.
Between the putter head and the carbon portion of the shaft, the Stability shaft narrows into a steel portion before the putter head. Does this take a little getting used to at address as well? Sure it does, but the adjustment really isn’t that bad. The overall look is nicely streamlined and gives the putter a solid (as in stability) look.
How Does it Feel?
The Breakthrough Golf Technology Stability putter shaft has a notably different feel before you even touch a ball. Coming in around 125 grams, the Stability feels heavier in your hands. Once you address your ball, it starts to make some sense. That heavier weight gives the Stability a solid and balanced feel. Between the heavier weight and the ultra-stiff flex of the shaft, consistency is a breeze.
You’ll quickly notice the excellent responsiveness of the Stability shaft. With the heavier weight, thicker shaft, and multi-material construction, I was skeptical about feel and feedback. I do believe the Stability mutes the feel a tiny bit (more like a shock absorber), but there is no issue with getting good feedback in your hands. It goes without saying that the putter head you choose will play a huge role in feel as well.
On-Course Performance
I read a quote from Barney Adams that said, “I’ve never seen a product that can improve someone’s putting so quickly.” Admittedly, I haven’t tested the Breakthrough Golf Technology Stability shaft on any monitors, but I have spent a good amount of time with it on different greens. To Adams’s point, the Stability shaft did have a very quick impact on my putting. The sensation is that the putter will do most of the work for you. Your job is just to make sure you have the right line and pull it back the correct distance.
Noting that putter shafts tend to have a weak spot that impacts the performance, BGT placed a flex-resistant aluminum insert at that weak point to strengthen the shaft. The ultra-stiff shaft with a no taper design reduces torque in the putter. Yes, even a putter can have torque issues. What does this really mean? The putter head will do less twisting and have a consistent impact point. While the Stability shaft alone can provide immediate benefits, you still need to have a consistent setup and a decent stroke.
Final Thoughts – Breakthrough Golf Technology Stability Putter Shaft
It’s hard to argue with the results of the Breakthrough Golf Technology Stability putter shaft. One of my biggest putting issues is a lot of head wobble throughout the stroke. I often get “handsy” and try to manipulate the club too much. With the Stability shaft, the head wobble disappeared from my putting stroke. I won’t claim the Stability is a silver bullet for your putting woes, but it should definitely be on the radar of anyone feeling like they need more stability and consistency in their putting stroke.
*As always, I strongly encourage you to work with an experienced fitter to get the right combination of shaft length and putter head. If you want optimal results, do it the right way.
