Cleveland CBX 2 Wedge
The Cleveland CBX 2 wedge builds on the success of the original CBX wedges from Cleveland Golf. The idea behind the CBX 2 is that most golfers need more forgiveness in their irons, but still play wedges with a blade profile. Why not have that same forgiveness you want in your irons in your wedges too? Thus the CBX wedges were born, bringing added forgiveness to the wedge games of the casual weekend warrior. The performance you want and the forgiveness you need.
The Looks
The first thing that stands out with the Cleveland CBX 2 wedge compared to a more conventional blade-like wedge is the cavity back appearance. This is where the forgiveness of the wedge comes from. With that cavity comes a larger sole than a traditional blade-profile wedge. Additionally, the face and head is larger than a traditional blade-style wedge. Similarly to the RTX 4, the CBX also features a full, deeper milling across the face that gives off a pretty sweet look.
You might be thinking, “well this thing is going to have a massive thick top line since its a cavity back wedge.” Guess what? It doesn’t. I was pleasantly surprised at the look from address. Bottom line, the CBX 2 looks pretty sweet and still maintains that Tour-like wedge profile from address.
How Does it Feel?
The Cleveland CBX 2 still maintains a very soft feel at impact when you hit the sweet spot, despite the cavity back profile. I can’t tell you it’s the same feel as hitting a pure blade-style wedge. That said, it’s not far off. You’ll still get feedback in the hands on mishits like you would with a traditional blade-style wedge. The difference? You won’t be losing as much distance or control with the CBX 2 when you don’t catch it perfectly.
How Does it Sound?
The sound of the Cleveland CBX 2 is where you will notice a difference from other wedges, but not necessarily in a bad way. The sound of the CBX 2 is fairly hard to describe, but try this: press the bottom of your tongue to the roof of your mouth, and make a clicking noise. That’s what the CBX 2 sounds like. Yeah, I know. Real weird. But that’s what it sounds like. (EDITOR’S COMMENT: I just did what Tommy described and it’s pretty accurate.)
On-Course Performance
The performance out on the course is where the Cleveland CBX 2 really shines. Just like with the original, the CBX 2 is a phenomenal club. On full swings, the CBX 2 launches very high, very easily. Much higher and easier to get in the air than a traditional wedge. If you miss it off the toe or low on the face, the cavity is going to help you still get the ball up without sacrificing a ton of distance. Think about it this way, it could be the difference between leaving it in the bunker from 70-yards with a traditional wedge, versus leaving it on the fringe with a more forgiving wedge. Which would you prefer?
Around the greens, the CBX 2’s spin and control is up there with any wedge I have played. I can still get the ball to spin and stop (well, to the best of my ability) like I could with the wedges in my bag. Tight lies aren’t an issue. Even with the larger sole, it slides easily under the ball. You can still open the face up and get under the ball without issues with that large sole too.
Final Thoughts – Cleveland CBX 2 Wedge
All I have to say about the Cleveland CBX 2 wedge is that it’s A+. It has the same control, spin, and look at address as a blade-style wedge with the forgiveness of a cavity back. Exactly what Cleveland is aiming for with this club. If you need any help in your wedge game (or even if you don’t), give the CBX 2 wedges a whirl.
