Dormie Workshop Headcovers
I stumbled across Dormie Workshop headcovers sometime in 2016 purely by luck, and a fortunate break it was. Fast forward, I have found my favorite wood covers in the game. Frankly, it’s hard to put into words why I love these guys, and lord knows I’ve certainly tried multiple times.
To describe Dormie, I find it easier to just let them speak for themselves…
Born in Nova Scotia, raised in Nova Scotia, golfed the world, and back to Nova Scotia. The dust has settled and we offer you this – A handmade leather product, that’ll rock your socks. Dormie Golf Workshop was created by PGA Canada members and brothers Jeff and Todd Bishop, with the intention of bringing fellow golfers really cool covers and allowing the customer to be involved in the process!
We are pumped to give a high end product that represents our passion for design and individuality combined with functionality and practicality.
I went through the process of having my own custom headcover set made with Dormie Workshop. With my imagination seemingly being the only limitation, they delivered some of the best headcovers the world has ever seen.
First Impressions
Honestly, the pictures of these Dormie Workshop headcovers speak pretty loudly, but having them in hand takes it up a million notches. With a handcrafted product, you always expect some level of flaw. With these Dormie headcovers there wasn’t anything you could criticize. The stitching is perfect, the edges are perfect, the execution is perfect. These headcovers are so impressively detailed and perfectly polished.
It’s important to note, these headcovers are handmade from high-quality lush cowhide. I specifically remember having to special order a high-end baseball glove in high school (before ordering stuff on the internet was a thing). When it showed up and I opened the box, there was this mesmerizing smell of supple leather that smacked me right in the face. These Dormie Workshop headcovers were exactly the same. Just from that wafting scent of premium leather, you knew these covers would be the business.
A small but significant feature is the lining. Dormie uses a high-quality liner that’s durable and is a nice added touch that shows they pay attention to every detail. In the case of my covers, they used a sick red and white Gingham fabric.
Custom Options
As you can see with these Dormie Workshop covers, the only similarity comes in the color scheme. Otherwise, these three headcovers are very different. That’s the beauty of working with Dormie Workshop. I gave them a whole bunch of different themes, and I got three totally different headcovers that were exactly what I wanted.
In the case of the goalie mask, Dormie typically only offers this design in a driver size cover. This design has quietly become one of their signature designs after they made one for the legend, Grant Fuhr. Since I wanted a goalie mask for my fairway cover, Dormie had to think outside the box to make the smaller size. Never one to back down from a challenge, the Dormie team used a special technique to cut the smaller leather pieces that make up the mask. I’d say they nailed it.
Design Quality
I’ve addressed my thoughts on the quality of Dormie Workshop headcovers already, but it’s important to highlight how good they really are. I’ve had a ton of custom headcovers from all over the place. Some good, some absolutely terrible. One thing I can confidently say is that I’ve never had a better quality leather wood cover from anyone. The Dormie team has figured out how to make something special and every cover that comes out of their shop shows it.
The driver headcover pictured above has been in my bag the longest. Aside from taking the shape of my driver as it’s broken in, it still looks the same as the day I got it. Dormie can make cool as hell headcovers all day, but if they fall apart, who cares? Fortunately, Dormie Workshop uses premium materials and their covers hold up like champs. I’m hard on my equipment and I’m no match for these covers.
On-Course Performance
As mentioned above, I’m hard on my gear so I like it to be durable and hold up well. I think you’ll be hard pressed to tell me that most regular golfers aren’t hard on their gear – especially with headcovers. Dormie Workshop clearly has a strong focus on durability with their covers. It’s important for them to be made so they are easy to get on and off your clubs, but have to hold up. Think of how often you throw them on the ground or the basket of the cart. Or how often they absorb the clanking of clubs as you put your bag in the trunk of your car?
When you pay a good chunk of change for a custom headcover, chances are you don’t want to lose it. What’s my point? You want them to stay on your clubs! Headcovers are lost all the time out on the course, and surprisingly frequently because they just fall off. Dormie Workshhop headcovers are made to fit your clubs well but that fit improves over time. As the leather breaks in, it takes the shape of its club and improves the fit.
Final Thoughts
It seems crazy to say a small headcover company out of Canada is one of my favorite companies in all of golf. There’s just something about the Dormie Workshop culture that’s infectious and I love every bit of it. The headcovers speak for themselves, but I strongly suggest getting to know these guys better because they’re the real deal. If you’re looking to go down one of the best golf Instagram trips you can, check out Dormie’s Instagram page. It’s one of my favorite stops on the internet and there’s always something that catches my eye that I missed the last time. Who knows, maybe it will help inspire your own set of custom headcovers?
