Edel SMS Pro Irons
Swing Match System weighting was introduced by Edel Golf via their wedges in 2021 which then made its way into an iron in 2022. The idea is that adjustable weights in the club can be positioned to place the CG in the most optimal position for a player’s individual swing. This gives the player better feel, more control, consistency in finding the center of the face, and optimal performance. In more simple terms, the SMS system helps players consistently groove the club with their own unique swing. With this concept proving successful so far, Edel needed to deliver an iron more suited for better ball strikers. Enter the Edel SMS Pro irons. These forged irons feature all of the SMS benefits, but in a compact player’s profile.
The Looks
From address, the Edel SMS Pro irons are everything you want a Tour-shaped player’s iron to be. There’s absolutely minimal offset, the top line is thin, and the blade length from heel to toe is nice and compact. The toe is more rounded and comes to a nice point at the top line. Like the other SMS clubs, the Pro features three weights in the muscle pad with the heaviest weight denoted by a red circle on it. And of course, the perfect finishing touch of the custom black, red, and silver ferrule. I also love how the Edel wings logo on the neck pops next to said ferrule.
How Does it Feel?
Edel did a great job getting the feel right with the SMS Pro irons. All of the things that make a forged player’s iron feel great are there. Should you find the sweet spot, the club feels super pure and solid. The club face provides accurate feedback so you know exactly where you struck the ball, for better or worse.
Then there’s there’s the “CNC-Milled Tri-Step” sole. This sole creates three different areas of bounce which is a major piece of the puzzle making the SMS Pro really feel like a Tour-inspired iron. The middle section of the sole is where the greatest amount of impact will be made with the turf. The trailing edge of the sole provides relief which essentially makes the sole thinner. So while the sole thickness is closer to a cavity back iron (have to make room for the weights somehow!), this tri-step sole makes the club feel more like a blade muscle back as it cuts through the turf.
Last but not least is the SMS weighting. Like the wedges and SMS irons, the SMS Pro felt like three totally different clubs to me depending on where I had the heavier weight. Without even using any launch monitors, I was able to tell I had the weight in the correct spot purely from how natural the club felt. There is absolutely a noticeable difference in the club’s feel depending on weight location, but when you have it in your correct spot, the SMS Pro iron feels natural and easy to slot on every swing.
How Does it Sound?
The Edel SMS Pro irons have that classic forged sound that you demand from a player’s iron. It’s a firm, yet modest “thwack” that has a slight pop to it. Of course, as you deviate from the sweet spot, it firms up to more of a “click”. Remember that tri-step sole I mentioned before? This also helps with that pure sound thanks to that minimal turf interaction. It’s a cleaner “sweep” through the turf so the auditory focus stays on the sound produced by the ball impacting the face.
On-Course Performance
Performance is a tough area for me to sum up with Edel SMS Pro iron. On one hand, it’s a player’s iron and it isn’t designed to be super forgiving. It’s for the players that can find the center of the face and want to be creative with their shot making, which the SMS Pro does in spades. I was able shape both directions, and up or down with ease. By the way, I really felt like that tri-step sole made a huge difference in this area as well. The sole seems to make the club naturally more versatile.
On the other hands, the SMS weighting concept seemingly makes the irons just easier to hit for a player’s iron. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t think a game improvement player will all of the sudden be able to play them well, but I think “qualified” players will find the SMS weighting makes the SMS Pro more comfortable in the hands. I felt like having the weight in the right place for me made it easier to slot my swing repeatedly. As a result, I was consistent in delivering the ball to the club and executing the intended shot I wanted to hit.
Final Thoughts – Edel SMS Pro Irons
I’m stealing this final thought straight from my other Edel SMS iron review. My experience with Edel’s SMS weighting system in their wedges and irons has truly been fascinating. While the concept is fairly straightforward and makes practical sense, feeling the difference in the weight positions through your own hands really is compelling. In the case of the SMS Pro irons, they are a really nice player’s iron that’s almost a relief to hit. Once you get the weight in set in the right place, the SMS Pro honestly feels like an old friend. As great as these irons are, make sure you get properly fit to really make sure you get the very best performance for your swing.
