MacGregor MacTec Driver
MacGregor Golf is historically one of the most significant names in the history of golf equipment. Their clubs have been used to win many Major championships all over the world dating back to the 19th century. However, as newer brands began to takeover in the metalwood era, MacGregor experienced difficulty in keeping up with the market. Recently, new ownership has aimed to reinvent the brand by offering high-quality equipment at accessible price points to golfers of all skill levels. The new MacGregor MacTec driver is a high-performance club that’s available for just $150.
The Looks
The MacGregor MacTec driver is designed to be a forgiving driver that’s easy for a wide range of players to hit well. As such, the footprint is a bit on the larger side with a “fuller” profile. There’s a bit more body to the trailing edge of the club to increase MOI which helps keep the club head straight at impact. Aesthetically, the MacTec driver has a sleek all black look, save for a little white branding. The crown has a matte finish which the jury’s still out on for me. I’ll be intrigued to see how well this finish holds up to scratching and whatnot over a longer period of time.
How Does it Sound?
When I’m hitting a full titanium driver, I expect there to be a notable metallic tone to it. The MacGregor MacTec driver does indeed carry that metallic signature, but it’s hardly “too metallic” or offensive. It also has a fairly loud, deep sound at impact. Some golfers with faster swing speeds may find this to be a bit too loud, but others will appreciate the feedback it provides. It’s a smart move as it gives players with slower swing speeds a little more sense of confidence that they’re hitting harder shots than they’re used to from a lot of other clubs.
How Does it Feel?
The first thing that really jumped out at me was the MacGregor MacTec driver’s balance. With a wider profile, and a low and back center of gravity (CG), the club head feels easy to control and keep squared through impact. Additionally, the titanium face feels solid with a good amount of jump to it. There’s plenty of response for a precise feedback so you know exactly where you’re striking the ball as well.
I’ll be perfectly honest with you, you’re going to be hard-pressed to find a driver with this quality of feel in this area of the market. The MacTec will exceed the “feel” of many “value level” drivers from many major brand names in the market.
On-Course Performance
Club Speed | Ball Speed | Launch Angle | Spin | Carry (Yds) | Total (Yds) |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
114.5 | 171.1 | 13.6º | 2622 | 284.6 | 291.3 |
I want to point out in this section that MacGregor offers the MacTec driver either built with a UST Mamiya shaft OR as “head only”. For this review, I went head only and installed an Aldila NV 2KXV Green shaft I had. This shaft is designed to be lower launching and spinning, and is a component I am more than comfortable swinging.
This driver is designed to be easy to launch in the air and hit relatively straight. It certainly accomplishes this goal. The CG is located in the rear of the head with a slight draw bias. As such, I found the MacTec driver to be able to get in the air on a straight path with consistent ease. I was impressed with the ability to control the driver and ultimately the reliability it delivers off of the tee.
Final Thoughts – MacGregor MacTec Driver
Golf equipment has really gotten expensive over the last decade. Some of it is totally worth it, some of it is just a strategic marketing move for sticker shock equaling quality. With these soaring prices, it’s refreshing to be able to find solid equipment at a price point that makes the game more accessible. The MacGregor MacTec driver will be a reliable driver with strong performance for a wide range of golfers.
Frankly, when I look at the equipment MacGregor produced over the last few decades, I feel like the MacTec driver is a massive leap forward in terms of quality and value. The new ownership is doing great work to make affordable golf equipment that’s deserving of the brand’s name (check out my review of the new MT-86 Pro irons here) and worthwhile pieces of gear to have in the bag.
