It’s officially Masters week. If you’re a fan of the Masters and haven’t heard of Jeff Knox, you need to get caught up. Jeff Knox is an absolute Augusta National and Masters legend as far as I’m concerned. In fact, I put him up there somewhere just behind Jack, Arnold, Tiger, and Bobby Jones for his legendary status to Augusta/Masters lore.
So who is this guy? Whenever an odd number of players make the cut, Augusta National sends Knox out to play in the first group to help keep a normal pace and to allow the tournament participant he’s paired with to play at his usual pace. Knox has been serving this role since 2003. Knox isn’t exactly a golf slouch. In addition to being a member at Augusta National, Jeff Knox is also a three-time Georgia Mid-Am champion and a member of the Georgia Golf Hall of Fame. Oh, and he also holds the amateur record at Augusta National with a 61 from the member tees.
Every year Knox gets the call, the stories and praises from the pros come rolling in. Most say he’s the best they’ve ever seen around the Augusta greens. Rory’s even taken to playing scouting rounds with the Legend. All I know is, I wish Jeff Knox got full TV coverage for his rounds and I could see him work the course. I also love the fact that he doesn’t putt everything out either. Why would he? He’s just a non-competing marker.
If you’re curious what Jeff Knox had in the bag at the 2018 Masters, see below. It’s a strong Titleist bag, with all current equipment (at the time) of course.
