PXG Xtreme Tour X Golf Ball
Known for their innovative approach to golf equipment, PXG has introduced golf balls to their product offering. The PXG Xtreme Tour X golf ball is geared toward players with swing speeds exceeding 95 mph who need a ball they can control with their longer clubs, but still get plenty of spin in and around the greens. Featuring a high-speed polybutadiene core and an ionomer layer, the PXG Xtreme Tour X delivers strong distance, higher trajectory, and a firmer feel.
How Does it Feel?
Being the PXG Xtreme Tour X is their ball for a higher-speed player, it does have a firmer feel. I won’t tell you that it’s rocky by any means, but it’s definitely firmer than the Xtreme Tour. Your swing speed will certainly play a large role in how the ball feels, but at a faster speed (I’m swinging driver around 112/113 right now), there’s a slight sense of “jump” in the ball. PXG bills it as “explosive,” which might be a little extreme (see what I did there?), but there is definitely some pop and enough feedback to feel in control of the golf ball.
Off the Tee
If you read my review of the Xtreme Tour golf ball (linked above), I noted I had much better control with its PXG Xtreme Tour X counterpart from the tee box. This is no surprise, really, as I am more in line with the target audience. The Tour X was more responsive off the clubface for me, and my general dispersion was much tighter. I think if there was one drawback for me personally, I did feel like the “higher trajectory” claim was valid. While I appreciated being able to get the ball in the air a bit more, the flight would rise a bit too much for me hitting into the wind. However, with downwind or no-wind shots, this flight helped achieve a few more yards of carry. So, long story short, it’s always worth seeing how your swing interacts with the golf ball.
Though the Xtreme Tour X launches a bit higher, I didn’t find it to have higher spin as you might expect. The spin rates stayed low enough to control in the wind as well as get a little rollout on the fairway. I won’t try and tell you it’s the lowest-spinning golf ball with a driver, but it definitely wasn’t overly spinny. I’m comfortable reporting that the Xtreme Tour X has an appropriate tee box spin performance for a faster swing-speed golfer.
On the Approach
Obviously different golfers have different needs in a golf ball, but I look for a ball to be somewhat boring on approach shots. It should be consistent, predictable, and do what I need it to do on different shots. Sometimes that’s spin a lot so it stops on the green, sometimes that’s come off of the club low and run when it hits the ground. Just do what I tell you to do. (As long as I make the correct swing on the ball, of course). That’s the experience I found with the PXG Xtreme Tour X golf ball. I was able to hit every shot I needed with no issues. High shots with soft landings would drop and stop, and low punchy irons would pierce and run. Exactly what I need my golf ball to do when I need it to do it.
Like any golf ball, I think the biggest decision-making factor will come down to subjective feel and if it works for your hands.
Around the Green
I found the PXG Xtreme Tour X to spin around the greens just as much as the soft Xtreme Tour. Maybe a player who spins the ball more than I do might notice a bigger difference, but I found the bite to be aplenty, especially for a “firm” ball. Getting the ball to respond as necessary was never an issue.
When it comes to putting, most of the performance is based on how the golf ball feels. My preference is for the ball to absorb the putter face a little bit, but still have enough “presence” to be able to clearly feel the ball. I definitely don’t want a marshmallow, but I certainly don’t want a clicky rock. I’d say a comfortable spot just past “medium” is my ideal putting feel. That’s just about where I felt like the PXG Xtreme Tour X landed. This area of feel makes it easy for me to control my speeds and feel confident in where I’m putting my ball.
Final Thoughts – PXG Xtreme Tour X Golf Ball
The PXG Xtreme Tour X is a high-performance golf ball designed for players with faster swing speeds. It delivers solid distance with good control off the tee. On approach shots, the ball is predictable and versatile, allowing for good players to hit a full suite of golf shots. Spin is more than sufficient around the green and offered me a comfortable putting feel. Overall, the Xtreme Tour X is a solid choice for high-speed players seeking a balance of distance and control.
