Look, winning the Masters is probably the biggest individual accomplishment in golf. Nobody will ever knock that. It’s the most prestigious Major Championship of the year, and if you win, you are forever remembered as a Masters Champion. Sergio Garcia won the Masters, his first and only Major (so far), in 2017, but don’t worry, he’s not letting anyone forget it any time soon.
I get it, everyone wrote off Sergio ever winning a Major, especially after he said so himself in an interview back in the day, so winning the Grand Daddy of them all for his first major in 74 tries is a huge deal for him, as it should be. However, it’s hilarious to me that he’s reminding people of it every chance he gets. Let’s take a look at a few times he has reminded us:
- Wimbledon: Sergio posted photos on Instagram hanging at Wimbledon (the tennis equivalent of the Masters) with Rafa Nadal, David Beckham, and a bevy of others, in all of which he was wearing his green jacket. To be fair, Danny Willett did the same thing the year before.
- Real Madrid vs Barcelona Soccer Match: Sergio was a part of the ceremonial kickoff between Spanish futbol powerhouses Real Madrid and Barcelona shortly after his Masters victory. What was he wearing during the event? You guessed it. Green Jacket.
- His Wedding: While Sergio said he wouldn’t wear his Green Jacket during the ceremony, he busted it out at the reception. I wouldn’t put it passed him to wear it to the ceremony, but I’m sure his wife probably nixed that idea.
The last, and most recent reminder? The naming of his daughter. Sergio and his wife Angela welcomed a beautiful baby girl into the world on March 14, 2017. Her name? Azalea Adele Garcia. As in the Azalea flowers throughout Augusta National Golf Club. The guy even used a reference to his Masters win to name his first born child. Now, his daughter and everyone who meets her, will be reminded of Sergio’s Masters win for the rest of her life, too. Talk about a power move.
In all seriousness, I love Sergio Garcia, and I’m stoked he won the Masters and hope he can pull out a few more Majors. I’d never in a million years play in the Masters, let alone win a Green Jacket. And if I did, I’d wear the damn thing to sleep every night. However, I still find it hilarious how much we are seeing him in public with his Green Jacket, but why not, right? The guy won the freaking Masters, so he can do whatever the hell he wants with his Green Jacket (or the naming of his children).
PS: Sergio and Angela also have a sweet Pomeranian (which has nothing to do with his Masters win). More importantly, however, their dog looks identical to Bill’s dog, Monkey (yes, Bill’s dog is named Monkey), who is also a Pomeranian.
