With my daughter’s birthday being this week, I thought it would be a good time to share a quick fun story on the website involving her. At the onset of the COVID pandemic around the world, there was a lot of uncertainty regarding, well…pretty much everything. Companies had to be creative both to help their businesses survive as well as keeping their customers engaged. So when the pandemic hit, our good friends over at Scott Readman Concepts ran a headcover design contest. The contest was a fun idea to give people in lockdown all over the world something fun to do.
The Scott Readman Concept Headcover Design Contest of 2020!
With everyone having limited options for outside entertainment, SRC aimed to give people of all ages a fun creative outlet. To keep the playing field even, there were multiple age groups (I’d be lying if I said I could remember what they were) and winners would be selected in each group from a different judge. Two of those judges were European Tour stars Eddie Pepperell and Chris Wood. Winners of each division would then have their original design printed on a headcover and sent to them. Having nothing but time on our hands, my entire family got to work with entries at the 3, 7, and 18+ age groups.
It kills me that I can’t find any of the actual drawings we sent in. (I know they’re somewhere in the house, I just can’t find them!) My wife drew a wonderful pencil portrait of Scott Readman himself. I drew this of a photo from one of my trips to visit Scott:
My daughter, 7 at the time, was obsessed with pandas. She’s still plenty fond of them, but it’s nowhere near the obsession it once was. So when the headcover templates were printed out, a panda was the obvious choice. The work was complete, scans of the drawings were sent in, and the wait began.
The Winner Is…
…not any of the grown ups in the house, that’s for sure. But I did get a text from Emma of SRC out of the blue informing me my daughter “won her age group!” I figured this was surely some sort of favoritism being played due to my close relationship with Scott Readman Concepts. I was, however, assured that was not the case and that good ole Eddie Pepp selected my daughter’s from the pile of entries he reviewed. While my daughter didn’t fully comprehend the achievement, I was obviously excited for the pleasant surprise.
Fast forward a few weeks and my daughter’s prize from the SRC headcover design contest arrived. Though my daughter didn’t have a driver to fit the new cover, it still took a prominent spot in her room for awhile. During a recent rearranging of her bedroom to fit her updated preteen preferences, she asked me if I wanted to relocate her winning headcover to my office amongst my other golf treasures. I excitedly obliged and it now sits on display as a reminder to a fascinating point in time.
So, please accept this public wishing of a happy birthday to my daughter. Heck, maybe I’ll even get to play some golf with her this summer.
