616 Flatsticks Mallet Putter Review
Hailing from Grand Rapids, Michigan, 616 Flatsticks offers extremely customizable carbon steel putters where the possibilities are endless. Founders Dan and Matt started 616 in 2022 at the height of the pandemic and haven’t looked back since. Providing customers with a white glove experience and chance to create your very own 1 of 1 putter, the experience and product is impressive from such a young brand. If you have an idea in mind, 616 Flatsticks will bring it to life giving you a piece no one else will have.
The Looks
When I said the 616 Flatsticks possibilities are endless, I was not exaggerating. Everything from head style, finish, shaft, grip, and everything in between. Not to mention the custom engraving where your personal touch and creativity can shine. Personally, I went with the mallet and decided to go for a Chicago theme. I found the Chicago color codes on Google and 616 Flatsticks was able to perfectly replicate the colors.
There are seven different alignment aid options. I asked Dan and Matt if they could replicate the 6 pointed star from the Chicago flag which came out great. Continuing the flag theme to the back cavity engraving, we added the four stars from the flag.
Rotating the head over, we went with blue weights and red accents. The best part, however, is the custom Chicago skyline engraving. I gave the 616 team a PNG file and they were able to make it come to life. Adding a bit more personalization, I added my initials on the heel and the Driving Range Heroes initials to round it out. Add in a matching red shaft and red Super Stroke 2.0 grip and this putter came out better than I ever could have imagined.
How Does it Feel?
The first thing you will notice about 616 Flatsticks Mallet putter is the head weight. This thing is heavy and that’s coming from someone who games a similar size mallet. This putter pulls your hands through the zone nicely, and almost takes them out of the equation altogether. Milled from 1020 carbon steel, this mallet putter has a soft feel off of the face. Thanks to the fang design, this putter has a high MOI giving it a nice, smooth balance.
How Does it Sound?
At impact, the 616 Flatsticks mallet has a deep toned “tock” which gets slightly higher pitched with a heel or toe strike. You will certainly feel mishits and the audio queues reflect the miss as well. Very similar to other milled putters I have tested, the sound compliments the feel nicely and is overall pleasing to the ear. Overall, I’m impressed and satisfied with the sound.
On-Course Performance
The 616 Flatsticks mallet putter performed exactly as I’d expect a premium mallet to perform. A major part of a putter’s performance is how well it meets your eye. That psychological effect is very real. I just felt more confident over the ball. Pair that with the heavy-weighted head that seems almost do the putting for you, it’s a hard combo to beat. Don’t get me wrong, I was initially blowing putts past the hole due to the heavier weight. However, after a few rounds and some mental adjustments, my lag putting improved drastically. The heavier weight and MOI helped speed control immensely.
In the accuracy department, I felt my 616 mallet performed great within ten feet. A solid strike had the ball quickly rolling end over end. Slight mishits toward the heel and toe also stayed on line with minimal speed loss. The roll was tight and easy to keep on your line.
Final Thoughts – 616 Flatsticks Mallet Putter
616 Flatsticks offers a premium experience for any golfer. From seemingly endless customization options to the highest quality materials, there is no doubt that you can create something special. Want a bright, neon, and crazy putter? No problem for 616 Flatsticks. Want something more traditional? Yup, they can handle that. Maybe something with a raw finish to patina over time? Oh yeah, they have that too. It’s all up to you and I will argue that when you make a putter that you think looks good, you will make more putts. I could not be happier with my new custom putter that I know is truly a 1 of 1.
