Ram Golf FX77 Irons Review

Ram Golf FX77 Irons

Ram Golf has a deep-rooted history in golf equipment. Legends of the game like Tom Watson, Ray Floyd, and Nick Price achieved great success with Ram Golf clubs in their bags. Over time, the brand has evolved and gone through many changes, but has recently been reintroduced under new ownership with a focus on quality products at consumer-friendly price points. The new Ram Golf FX77 irons are their premium distance irons featuring clean looks, quality components, high forgiveness, and an extremely affordable price point starting at $400.

The Looks

There are two different finishes available for the Ram Golf FX77 irons. Pictured in this review is the brushed chrome finish, but you can also get the FX77 in a black finish. Should you choose the black finish, there’s a $50 increase in price. Regardless of which finish you choose, the FX77 features minimal branding with the modern “Ram’s head” logo in the middle of the muscle pad and the classic ‘Ram’ wordmark on the blade toward the toe.

At address, the profile is on the larger side of ‘player’s distance’. I’d say it rests comfortably between player’s distance and game improvement (GI). The head size is a bit over moderate and the toplines are on the thicker side, but both of which I would expect from a hollow-body distance iron. I would also say the offset is fairly noticeable. From this perspective, the FX77 definitely leans closer to the GI side and less “shotmaker”. That said, the FX77 is very clean behind the ball and has a nice minimalist look for a club in this category (especially at this price point).

Feel 8

How Does it Feel?

The Ram Golf FX77 are designed to be long, easy to get in the air, and pretty forgiving. Part of this is achieved through the shaft options.  For a $50 upcharge, the FX77 is available with graphite UST Mamiya Recoil shafts. If you prefer steel, the FX77 is available with the KBS Tour 90. Both of these shafts are lightweight with a fairly active/lively feel. Combine those shafts with the FX77’s hollow body and there’s generally a lot of jump when you strike the golf ball. One might even say there’s a “snap” to it when you make a good swing.

Through the turf, the rounded leading edge and sole have a nice glide through the turf. While the FX77 is somewhat generous on a heavier strike, but won’t save you from a deep dig. On solid swings, turf interaction is clean and matches well with the snap mentioned above.

How Does it Sound?

If you’ve read some of the iron reviews on this site, you’ll find this section to be familiar. Hollow-body, injection-filled irons have a unique sound to them, and the Ram FX77 irons are no exception. The sound at impact has more of a “slap” to it rather than the “crack” you’d get from a solid forged iron. Since the sweet spot is fairly generous, the clean, pure “whap” is consistent across most of the face. As you get closer to the toe and heel, the sound deadens up.

On-Course Performance

In short, I’d say the Ram Golf FX77 irons perform exactly as advertised. The lower center of gravity makes it easy to get the ball up in the air which helps produce more carry. Also, the hollow-body design constructed of a 431 stainless body and 17-4 steel face produce fast speeds consistently across a large portion of the face. Though the launch angle is a bit higher, the FX77 has “power lofting” (see specs below) to balance out the trajectory for a nice piercing flight. Longer distance was easy to achieve. Combine that performance with the KBS Tour 90 shafts and I found the FX77 irons to be a very user-friendly distance iron.

Final Thoughts – Ram Golf FX77 Irons

The new Ram FX77 irons are a solid performer at an extremely accessible price point. Players looking to upgrade an old set of irons while gaining benefits of modern club design (without breaking the bank) are a perfect fit for the FX77. They’re extremely friendly for a wide range of handicaps, especially players that are looking for a little help in getting the ball up in the air, and the looks are a great blend of classic and contemporary. They may not be Tom Watson’s old Forged Tour Grinds, but it’s very exciting to see a solid new product from one of golf’s historic brands in the Ram FX77 irons!

  1. Wow. Those look eerily similar to the Sub 70 699’s except these are 1* stronger across the board. Wonder if they come out of the same factory overseas.

Let’s be honest, Ram doesn’t even know who Sub70 is. These are ALL copies of the original Taylormade p790 irons which changed the face of golf. If anyone deserves credit it’s Taylormade.

      • I don’t think you’re wrong at all about the original P790’s contribution to the evolution of “resin-filled hollow body” irons, but I think saying the current direct-to-consumer parent company of Ram Golf doesn’t even know who Sub 70 is is likely pretty untrue. That said, I don’t think Ram was targeting a Sub 70 either.

Also very similar (including lofts) to direct to consumer brand Takomo. I actually bought these Ram irons for my teen son who is a casual golfer. They are quite impressive for the price.

  3. Any stores carry them or are they only direct order from Ram?

Sure look like Pursuit m410 …..I play the c510 an the feel wonderful.

  5. Very cool review. I agree they are very similar to the TM P790s. Can’t wait to try them out.
