Wedge Yips Update 10: Kind of the Conclusion?

So my Wedge Yips Series has been going on for quite some time now.  I can’t thank the various people enough that have contributed to the ups and downs of this journey.  Here’s the thing.  I think we’re at a point to conclude this series for now.  Let me be clear, I in no way think I’m fully cured of this.  I also won’t try and tell you I’m a good wedge player now.  But, I’ve hit a point where I see light at the end of the tunnel.  Wedge Yips Update 10 is about how I’ve worked my way into a position where I’m not so scared of my wedges anymore.

So maybe we won’t call this a conclusion, but more of a wedge yips blog hiatus.  Hopefully down the road I’ll be in a position to pop in with a surprise “Where Are They Now?” blog post about the wedge yips.  In the meantime, let me tell where I’m at and how I got here.

The Journey to the Current State of My Wedge Yips

I’ve mentioned over the last few wedge yip updates that I’ve been making some good progress, but the lack of being able to get outside, then COVID lockdown, created some obstacles.  Well, over the past few months, practice facilities have been open again and I’ve been working at the driving range on real grass.  Naturally, I went backwards in my progress and started feeling that itch in my brain.  Starting to get zero confidence in my wedge game once again.

Fortunately, a little back and forth with Andy Gorman guided me to where I needed to be.  Andy reminded me of the fundamentals he previously explained to me via my Golfin lessons.  The problem was, I thought I was actually doing all of it and just doing some other weird thing that may be the cause of my issues.  Obviously, with a quick glance at a video, it was easy to see the truth.  It was the same old stuff.  So back to the garage practice area I went, and I tried EVERYTHING.  Nothing clicked.  Then out of nowhere, it all came together.  Somehow I realized, I wasn’t keeping my head stable much like the picture above.  Realizing that, I also realized I wasn’t rotating, but was actually shifting my weight back and forth.  A big no no.

Once I focused on just keeping my head in the circle and rotating, we were back in business.  Everything else became almost automatic.  The next step was to take it to grass and tight lies to prove it.  Sure enough, I found the same success on the range.  I’d still hit some bad shots, but they were always a result of not doing these basic things.  I was able to repeat this over four more sessions.

Wedge Yips Update 10 Final Thoughts

Like I said, I don’t think I’m fully cured of the wedge yips by any means.  What I set out to do in order to cure manage my wedge yips was find thoughts and feels that I could repeatedly call on with a wedge.  I feel I’ve finally hit that point via my work with Andy Gorman.  This doesn’t mean I’ll execute perfectly every time by any means, but I’ve already worked myself out of jams putting these things into practice.  There is still a lot of progress to be made, but I’m on the right path finally and I’ll just keep grinding away at it.

So there you have it for Wedge Yips Update 10.  Hopefully you don’t hear from me on this topic for awhile.  I will admit, I already fear the “crashing down to reality” post for update 11.  Seems like a great head space to be in.
