I’m almost back, you guys. As far as golf is concerned, I’ve officially started testing the waters. You may recall I recently wrote about having to take it easy for a bit due to a recent health issue. Actually, we even talked about it on That Range Life if you want to watch that episode (don’t forget to subscribe!):
So while I’ve been taking it easy, adjusting to a new lifestyle, and generally healing, I’ve started to get some life back in me. Though I’m still cautiously approaching many things, I’ve started testing the waters on various activities to see what I’m working with. Well, 4th of July weekend, I reached out to The Riv and asked him if he wanted to hit our local driving range so I could see what swinging a golf club was like. Josh obliged (pictured above), and we had a lovely meetup and bashed some balls down range.
I meant to bring a handful of items I needed to review, but naturally the general stress of swinging a club for the first time at a golf course made me forget. Seems reasonable to me. To be fair, I chipped a few balls off of a mat in my yard, and may or may not have hit a few 9 irons into the abyss, but this felt like the first time doing “the real thing”.
Surprisingly, it went really well. Things are definitely different. I apparently have a new ball flight now and my misses are way different. All are clearly reflections of physical differences/changes, which is good, but I’m definitely going to have to do some adjusting.
Final Thoughts
Frankly, in the long run, I think I might see quite an improvement in my game once I get some strength back and “swing awareness”. But we’ll start small. A bucket of balls felt like A LOT of work and I’m hurtin’ from it a bit the day after. I still have to play 18 holes and see how I can handle that, but you have to start somewhere and it felt good to be back swinging. It was also nice to meetup with someone and have a good golf nerd talk. A return to normalcy if you will… But right now, I feel like I might have a slight “radioactive spider bite” thing going with my golf game and I don’t hate it.
Overall, I’m doing a lot better and making some good health progress. Still trying to lay low and ease into things. Every day seems to be better and more adjusted, I definitely don’t feel normal or “like my old self” yet, but that’s ok. Everything is trending the right way and I’m sure I’ll break a few course records in the very near future.
