BIG MAX: What Makes the Cut - 4

BIG MAX: What Do You Need in a Lightweight Stand Bag?

When riding a cart or even using a push cart, most golfers are prepared to pack every piece of gear they have. When wheels are taking the weight, then why not be prepared for all eventualities.

But when you choose to carry, what are the items that make the cut? Every golfer will have their individual preference, but consideration of what gear you will carry round 18 has started long before you booked your tee time…

“When designing our most lightweight golf bags we really have to dig into what’s most important for a golfer,” comments Maxi Reiter, Head of Brand at leading bag and push cart manufacturer BIG MAX. “We can drive down weight with clever design and lightweight materials, but ultimately, some level of storage and functionality has to be sacrificed.”

“We start by asking what the non-negotiables for golfers are, and that starts with a large utility pocket that can fit a spare sweater or a waterproof jacket. A large cooler pocket is also one of our top priorities as even though the extra weight of a drink is a negative, keeping hydrated is so important to a golfer’s game.”

“Our last non-negotiable is a lined valuables pocket to keep phone, watch and wallet safe. We always make these 100% waterproof too. Then we get into preferences. I’m happy to have balls, tees, glove, ball markers and pitch mark repairer all together, but some people like to separate them out so we give 2 pockets to these accessories. Having made those judgements, 5 is the minimum number of pockets on offer in our full size stand bags – though we did sneak in a sixth in our 3.5 lb Dri Lite Feather.”

“We also provide a selection of clips and loops for a towel, rangefinder and umbrella. These add to the functionality of the bag and need hardly any extra space or weight. Away from the more obvious weight and storage, we actually look at ease of access too. Most of our bags have shorter legs that are housed away from the collar of the bag so the leg architecture doesn’t interfere with the cart straps. This also gives a more upright standing position for easier access to all the pockets. There really is so much to consider when aiming to give every type of golfer the best possible experience.”

BIG MAX: What Makes the Cut - 5

So what makes the cut in your bag? How many balls are enough and how do you split up your gear? Whatever your set up, modern stand bags take lightweight functionality to an incredible level. It also makes you wonder what else we need to carry round 18 that takes up 10 or more pockets on the largest cart bags!
