Cobra Bio Cell Hybrid Review

Cobra Bio Cell Hybrid

The Cobra Bio Cell hybrid is an easy to launch hybrid with speed for good distance. In this golf guy’s opinion, the Bio Cell was the foundation for Cobra starting to make the best hybrids they’ve made in years. This is the one that I feel started it all. Forgiving feel and being easy to hit were big reasons this hybrid saw some significant time in my bag.

First Impressions

Say what you will, Cobra has made some cool looking finishes in modern years.  Maybe they aren’t your type, but they’re still cool looking.  I was immediately a big fan of this metal flake red on the Bio Cell hybrid.  If you’re more into traditional styles there is a black option.  Those with a more diverse palate can find the Bio Cell in a wide variety of other color options.

From a footprint perspective, the Bio Cell hybrid is medium-large and somewhat in the mini-wood family.  It’s far from oversized and looks good behind the ball with a medium face depth.  The black face with the red crown gives it a slightly more open look at address but the club sits pretty square in reality.  Cobra utilizes the Smart Pad on the sole so the club sits square at address regardless of loft setting.

How Does it Feel?

Cobra used a shallower and thinner face on the Bio Cell hybrid to give it more flex at impact for longer distance and higher trajectory.  The end result is a pretty lively feel where it feels like the ball is springing off the face.  Part of the face design was also to increase the sweet spot.  The forged E9 Bio Cell Face with a finely tuned center of gravity (CG) makes for a forgiving club that is more rewarding on tougher shots.

How Does it Sound?

Not totally unexpected, the Cobra Bio Cell hybrid has a metallic “ping” to it.  The forged steel face and larger head shape are the perfect combination for that type of tone.  If you’re looking for a more solid “crack” sound, this is not the hybrid for you.  If you’re ok with a mini-fairway wood tone, then you’re good to go with the Cobra Bio Cell.

On-Course Performance

Cobra moved the weight from the crown so it would be low and toward the back of the club head in the Bio Cell hybrid.  This was intended to raise the MOI and lower the CG to launch the ball higher and longer.  My experience was that the Bio Cell hybrid was extremely easy to launch with a high trajectory.  I found this characteristic to be extremely beneficial for those silly par 3’s where I can’t reach with an iron.  (Side note: that should be considered cheating in golf architecture and we should all start an official protest.)

I don’t know about the rest of you, but I find hybrids to be very touchy.  Cobra providing eight different settings via MyFly8 adapter helped me tune these hybrids to the exact settings that worked for me.  Adjusting the loft also impacts face angle which also has a significant impact for me with hybrids.  By being able to find the right setting, I was able to get the distance and flight I was looking for.  Ultimately, the Bio Cell hybrids had plenty of distance for me and I was able to put a good flight on the ball from longer ranges.

Final Thoughts

The Cobra Bio Cell hybrid is a strong club for that spot between your longest iron and your shortest wood.  I won’t try and convince you it’s a great long iron replacement, but it does make hitting a 230 yard shot much less of a battle.  I think Cobra has made better hybrids since the Bio Cell, but it’s still a great club that holds its own even by today’s standards.  As mentioned earlier, the Bio Cell hybrid was the start of a great evolution of hybrids from Cobra.

  1. I’d be interested to know which Cobra hybrids you feel are better. I have the 2017 F Max ones and feel that the Bio Cell is superior to those.

  2. Just traded 3 old wedges &a985 driver for $50 used cobra 3/4 hybrid in good condition. My issue is good contact on second shots on long holes. Have tried 6 different makes models & lofts to no avail reaching to a panic level on these second shot swings.I hope this cobra works and i will try it for first time when our snow melts. Cant wait and will provide my results.
