Cobra Fly-Z+ Fairway Wood Review

Cobra Fly-Z+ Fairway Wood

The Cobra Fly-Z+ fairway wood is a compact, high-performance fairway wood designed with the better golfer in mind.  There are a few key features Cobra implemented to give those players more speed with a touch more forgiveness.  The key is remembering who this fairway wood is geared toward.  While Rickie Fowler has kept one his bag for years, it’s not necessarily meant for mortals.  Players looking for low flight, low spin with good feel and distance will be the best fit for the Fly-Z+ fairway wood.

First Impressions

Cobra fairway woods were actually a staple in my golf bag for quite a few years.  One of the longest running fairway woods in my bag was the Bio Cell+ which was a predecessor to the Fly-Z+ fairway wood.  Given that history, my first impression of the Fly-Z+ fairway wood was that of familiarity.  Like the Bio Cell+, the Fly-Z+ has a compact footprint with a shallow-ish face.  The biggest difference comes in the sole with a visible weight for controlling the Center of Gravity (CG).

If the white finish isn’t quite up your alley you’ll be happy to know Cobra made this club available in other colors as well.  Whether you want Rickie orange or traditional black, Cobra has you covered with a wide range of options.

How Does it Feel?

You’ll find the Cobra Fly-Z+ fairway wood to have a smaller sweet spot but precise feel.  There’s notable feedback from a mishit and a good ball has lively action to it.  Through using a Speed Channel face, Cobra intended to add speed to the face with forgiveness.  While I can’t tell you I feel like the Speed Channel turned the Fly-Z+ into a high-handicap fairway wood, it does seem to add a little heat to a well-struck shot.

Additionally, the Fly-Z+ has a fairly solid feel to it even with that flexible Speed Channel.  I’m not a big fan of my fairway woods feeling like a trampoline and the Fly-Z+ doesn’t have that at all.  It feels strong like the face holds up and transfers everything back into the golf ball.

How Does it Sound?

The Cobra Fly-Z+ fairway wood has a very solid “non-metallic” sound to it.  In the right hands, the Fly-Z+ fairway wood has a strong “thwap” with a hint of “click” to it when struck with a good swing.  Shots lower on the face tend to just sound flat and mishits toward the heel or toe sound dead.  Remember, the Fly-Z+ fairway wood is designed for players that are good ball strikers so finding the sweet sound regularly shouldn’t be difficult for those players.

Cobra brought back their MyFly8 technology to give players the ability to adjust the club between eight different loft and trajectory settings.  In addition to the adapter adjustability, Cobra placed a weight in the sole toward the face to lower the flight and spin of the ball.  All of these settings give a good player the ability to dial the Fly-Z+ into a rope-hitting machine.  At the time of testing this club, I found it to be automatic for hitting low piercing shots with a good amount of roll.  I found the greatest advantages to come off the tee and off the deck.  From the rough, I struggled a little bit, but I’d hang that more on me than the club itself.

Final Thoughts

To me, the Cobra Fly-Z+ fairway wood is sort of a cult classic.  I can (and will) argue that there have been plenty of other better fairway woods since it arrived on the scene.  Hell, Cobra’s own clubs have beat it in my mind.  But don’t be fooled, it’s a still great fairway wood that holds its own.  It’s definitely not a coincidence that the Fly-Z+ survived basically three years in young Richard’s bag.  Though the Cobra Fly-Z+ fairway wood is not my current gamer, rest assured you’ll currently find one laying around my basement as a backup.
