Cobra King LTD Fairway Wood
Cobra claims the King LTD fairway wood is their longest and straightest fairway wood to date. Using the same design concepts as the driver, the King LTD has a low center of gravity (CG) and high MOI. Will this result in some bombs from the fairway? Let’s find out…
First Impressions
I’ll admit it, I was a sucker for the Cobra King LTD lineup and was dying to get my hands on it. The Spaceport in the sole is the most ridiculous thing I’ve ever seen on a club and I love every bit of it. A medium face and footprint looks good from both the tee and the deck. Cobra gives you two color options with the signature Rickie Fowler black and orange, or the murdered out matte black and grey look.
As far as first impressions go, the King LTD looked great, felt good, and made me anxious to hit the par 5’s.
How Does it Feel?
Explosive, forgiving, and responsive are the best ways to describe how the Cobra King LTD fairway wood feels. A well-struck shot feels like the ball absolutely jumps off the face and is very smooth. The response is there, but fans of the old rock solid fairway woods may find this one too lively. Ultimately it will come down to personal preference, but the King LTD and I were quick friends because of its feel.
How Does it Sound?
The Cobra King LTD fairway wood and driver have a lot of sound similarities. The face is forgiving with a large sweet spot and you get a smaller woody “crack” like the driver. I’d say it’s a muted tone like the driver, but for a fairway wood, the tone is pronounced. Mishit a shot and it sounds a little dead, but a shot on the screws sounds absolutely popped. The King LTD contact sound is the least metallic sounding on the market in my opinion.
On-Course Performance
Club Speed | Ball Speed | Launch Angle | Spin | Carry (Yds) | Total (Yds) |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
103.8 | 150.8 | 11.5º | 2745 | 258.4 | 282.4 |
282.4 yards with a standard 3 wood off the deck. That’s why I loved the Cobra King LTD fairway wood. This was a scenario where I thought that maybe I just got lucky a few times. As I kept effortlessly repeating with similar shots, I began to pay more attention. Then the deal was sealed. I carried a shot over 275 yards with a total yardage of 303. 303 yards with a 14.5º 3 wood. I’m a weekend warrior that can play a bit better than the average fellow warrior, but that’s a big number. Done deal, the King LTD went straight in the bag.
Hitting long and straight shots off the fairway and out of the rough was fairly effortless. Tee shots were a breeze with plenty of workability and strong flights. From deck or tee, the King LTD fairway wood is easy to get in the air and control your shot. It’s important to keep in mind that the club will do the work for you. Knowing what this club is capable of, I often find myself swinging out of my shoes. Trust me, a good swing will make the ball go plenty.
Final Thoughts
Cobra can make whatever claims they want about the Cobra King LTD fairway wood. The fact is that I’ve never hit a fairway wood better and with such ease. I wholeheartedly agree to Cobra’s claims of forgiveness and ease of launch. If I remember to just make a good swing, the King LTD fairway wood makes the par 5’s a lot shorter. I stand behind this review and and the King LTD fairway wood. As much I’m going on about this 3 wood, I haven’t even began to tell you how ridiculous the 5 wood is. If you haven’t checked the King LTD fairway wood out yet, do yourself a favor…
