ECCO Cage Pro BOA 2 Golf Shoe
Once again, ECCO has tempted me with a new golf shoe. I recently got into a fresh pair of their Cage Pro BOA 2s, with the goal of adding another comfy shoe with a bit of a different function than I’m used to. As always, these ECCOs are stylish, durable, high performers, and feature the awesome BOA closure system.
The Looks
The ECCO Cage Pro BOA 2 mixes their trademark European looks with a splash of futuristic styling. My pair is “wild dove,” a very understated matte gray color accented with a firm feeling black heel cup (FLUDIFORM – for stability.) Sharp! I’m a fan of the super subtle “four dot” kind of logo thing ECCO does in lieu of a gigantic label. These are reflective too, so a little extra fancy.
Ok, now brace yourself, as I believe I’ve written one of the most compelling and accurate descriptions of an object in my life. Any sentence I’ve crafted in the past or in the future will likely pale in comparison.
Anyway…
The bottoms of these shoes look like some kind of strange spider web, or if you stepped in some kind of goop. And they have little nipples on the end, for grip.
Right?!
Who am I to question these brilliant Danish shoe engineers? ECCO calls it SPYDR-GRIP, and it’s yet another example of the high-end tech and materials crafted into these shoes.
Comfort Level
ECCO in my opinion, makes the most out-of-the-box comfortable shoe I’ve ever worn. That’s considering the everyday walkers, heavy-duty snow shoes, and business professional varieties I own. It’s a premium product. With these Cage Pro BOA 2s being so light, you’ll have no issue as a walking golfer. I’ve worn many other brands, and often times I’ll find a stock shoe will fit a bit tighter (well, for my feet at least). ECCO often fits a bit wider, so most folks will appreciate the room, but won’t feel like they’re sliding around much. These are like an extension of your foot, which I’m sure ECCO’s shoe craftsmen have been working to perfect for the last 50+ years.
So here’s the revelation for me – the BOA closure system. I don’t know how I’ve not had a pair of shoes with these before! It’s literally like velcro, but for adults. They let you get those shoes on and off with a snap and a twist. So far it’s proven quite durable, and rarely needs readjustment for me. I’ll look for this feature on golf shoes from here on out.
Side note, the old hockey goalie in me needs to shout out Brian’s Custom Sports for incorporating the BOA system into hockey gear. COOL!
On-Course Performance
Ok, so we know we’re going to look sharp with our ECCOs, but does it make you a better golfer? Well, hard to say. So far, the Cage Pro BOA 2s have performed well in a variety of situations. We’ve had a rough go with weather here in the Midwest. It’s been super cold (so firm, frozen fairways) and then soft and wet (so tons of squishy lies.) The Cage Pros have held up well. I’m not so sure how the SPYDR-GRIP will do in the long and lush grass of the Spring and Fall, but I’m apt to give a lot of credit to the little gripping nips on the end.
Side note – if you want superior gripping, check out their new ECCO BIOM G3.
One last note about the Cage Pro BOA 2s – they’re constructed of the best materials around. They feature what ECCO calls DRITTON uppers that allow for lightweight and breathability. They also have my favorite material ever, GORE-TEX, which means they’re going to hold up wonderfully in wet weather.
Final Thoughts
ECCO has another winner with the Cage Pro BOA 2. They look phenomenal, feel great, and perform well in a variety of conditions. The BOA closure system lets you kick them on and off with incredible ease and really adds to the “shoe experience,” if that’s even a thing. It is a thing…
