Edel EAS 5.0 Putter Review

Edel EAS 5.0 Putter

Folks, this is a review I’ve been sitting on for a bit and have been super excited to get to. Let me start by saying that this is a tough one to remove any bias from and there’s a lot more to the story, but I’m going to give it a fair and reasonable shot. I was fortunate to be able to get fit for this putter at Edel HQ in Denever, so that influence is unavoidable. In this review, we’re talking about the Edel EAS 5.0 putter. With its mid-mallet profile, perfect balance, and great feel, the EAS 5.0 has been a game changer for me.

The Looks

Funny story about me ending up in the Edel EAS 5.0 putter. The 5.0 was the last shape I wanted. I’ll save that story for my post about the fitting experience, but I was definitely more drawn to the slick 2.0 and 4.0 shapes at first. Of course, as my fitting went on, the mid-mallet “D” shape clearly clicked with my eyes far beyond the rest. I felt more confident over the putter and was able to lineup to my target pretty much perfectly every time. Also helping alignment are the interchangeable alignment plates. Each plate has a different line configuration to help with how you aim. I would say pick what you feel suits your eye the best unless you get fit for your putter. The fitting process will show you that this makes a huge difference and will help you settle on the correct choice.

Aesthetically, the EAS putters are unique. The vibe I get is a true blend of advanced engineering and classic artistry. There’s everything from sharp and soft lines, milled pockets, carbon fiber sole plates, interchangeable sole weights, and milled faces. Longtime Edel fans might find the Hex face to be reminiscent of the original hand-set pixel faces of early putters from the brand.

How Does it Feel?

There are two main standouts for me regarding the Edel EAS 5.0 putter’s feel. Balance and response. Admittedly, this EAS 5.0 was fit for my specific putting stroke so that’s going to play a massive role in the balance. For instance, the head weight is complimented by an internal “Opti-Vibe” weight and could have a counterweight at the butt of the club. In my case, I don’t have a counterweight, but I do have two Opti-Vibe weights located in the perfect locations within the shaft for my swing. As a result, the putter practically swings itself and feels incredibly smooth. It’s easily one of the most perfectly balanced putters I’ve had with my stroke.

My favorite description of “feel” with golf clubs is the classic “firm, but soft”. It sounds like a total oxymoron, but when you’ve felt it, you know exactly what it means. In my opinion, the EAS 5.0 100% matches that description. The way I’d more accurately explain this phenomenon is that the feedback from the face at impact is very precise so you know exactly where you’re striking the ball, but there’s a sort of “absorbent” sweetness to it. Of course, as you deviate from the sweet spot, that feeling will firm up a good bit. But good news, if this putter is properly fit to you, finding the sweet spot is plenty easy.

How Does it Sound?

I need a little presence/resonance in my putter’s tone, but I don’t want it to be clicky by any means. And I certainly don’t want anything near a dead marshmallow tone either. The tone of the Edel EAS 5.0 is exactly what I’m looking for in a putter’s sound. I’m always hesitant to throw around “tock” as the sound of a putter, but it’s pretty perfect for the EAS 5.0. Like the feel, there’s enough precision in the audio feedback, but it’s still incredibly smooth and sweet. Of course, be weary of your golf ball as always. How hard or soft of a ball you use will play a major role in the overall tone. My Bridgestone Tour B X was a great match for my ear.

On-Course Performance

Automatic. I could just stop right there for this section. The only thing stopping me from saying the Edel EAS 5.0 was “immediately automatic” was that I needed a little adjustment period for speed/distance control on the course. I can honestly say, however, I saw immediate results in my accuracy and putts made. Of course being specifically fit for any putter makes a huge difference, but it genuinely felt like the club did most of the work for me. This is a great place to be with a putter, let me tell ya. Having confidence in my lines resulted in making more putts over ten feet than I’ve seen in a long time. Unless they were extra slippery, putts inside of eight feet started to feel like gimmes.

A majority of the EAS 5.0’s excellent performance is a result of its incredible balance and perfect alignment. There’s no questioning that, but it would be a disservice to not acknowledge the roll it produces. Edel claims the machined Hex face “creates friction and incites forward roll”. Based on my experience with their wedges and irons, I’ll believe they have the science to prove this, but I can say my experience reflected this claim. The ball starts its roll pretty immediately off of the face and stays tight and true along its path. It’s perfect and automatic – just like I said at the start of this section.

Final Thoughts – Edel EAS 5.0 Putter

The Edel EAS 5.0 is a premium putter that offers a blend of advanced engineering and classic artistry with the performance to match. It’s perfectly balanced for my putting stroke and produces a smooth, sweet roll with absolute consistency and accuracy. Additionally, the feel is fantastic and my overall putting confidence has gone way up since putting the EAS 5.0 in my bag. True, getting professionally fit was a major contributor to the success of this review experience, but there’s no argument whatsoever that the EAS 5.0 is as fine of a putting instrument as it gets. I anticipate that this one is going to stay in the bag for quite awhile!
