Edison Golf 2.0 Wedge
The Edison Golf 2.0 wedge, a new and improved forged wedge designed for the average golfer. There are few products I test and keep in the bag long term, but Edison wedges are an exception. Since testing in the original model in the summer of 2022, I’ve loved them to death (check out that review here). The low launching and spinny characteristics of the original wedges took my short game to the next level. So naturally, I couldn’t wait to get my hands on the new model. Featuring an all new finish and enhanced soft buttery feel thanks to the five-time forging process, the 2.0s provide a jump in consistency in both distance and spin from their predecessors. Could these wedges really get any better?
The Looks
Let’s get one thing straight, Edison wedges look fantastic. The minimalist design is super clean in hand and in the bag like the original wedges. One major improvement in the aesthetics department is the new Pearl Chrome Plating along the face of the wedges. The matte finish reduced the glare at address which after a season of playing them was one of the few downsides of the original. Not only does it look more premium, but your eyes will be thanking you too.
The Edison Golf 2.0 features similar branding to the original, but with more weight added to the cavity in an almost geometric pattern making it more interesting to look at. Over the ball, these wedges have a thin top line that is thin enough to look classic but thick enough to promote confidence. A nice in-between. (If that makes any sense.) Again, these wedges look great, and in my opinion better than some of the big brands we all know well.
How Does it Feel?
As I said in my review last year, not only do Edison wedges look great but they feel even better. With a new five-time forging process, the feel has gone to the next level. The Edison 2.0 wedges feel soft on full shots all over the face compared to the firmer feel I noticed with the originals. With 42% more weight behind the face, the sweet spot is much larger than your traditional wedges and 17% more than last year’s model.
Nothing new in the sole department, but the Koehler sole is worth mentioning for those not familiar with Edison. The “Koehler Sole” combines some of the best designs of all time into a single versatile design. Inspired and conceived on a trip in 1990 to the Old Course, founder Terry Koehler introduced a high bounce angle in the front and low angle in the back to be able to handle a variety of conditions. The sole cuts through turf effortlessly, throwing dollar bill size divots with ease. Alternatively, with sand and shots requiring an open face, the sole provides enough bounce to get you through the worst of lies.
How Does it Sound?
With the Edison Golf 2.0’s improved forged feel, the sound is improved as well. Not by a large margin, but noticeable to someone who played the originals for a whole season like myself. What was previously a slightly higher click is met with a pleasant soft thud. This may be in part to the new Pearl Chrome Finish or potentially increased weighting. It’s hard to pinpoint, but regardless, I really like the sound of these wedges.
On-Course Performance
After upwards of four rounds and several range sessions with the Edison Golf 2.0’s in the bag, I can confidently say the new model is a big step up. The real game changer comes in the forgiveness and consistency department.
Let’s go into the returning features that make Edison wedges great. As I mentioned, 42% more mass above the centerline of the wedge means more forgiveness where the average golfer needs it. Now don’t get me wrong, these wedges perform just as good as the big name brands do on center strikes. But here is the kicker, my usual mishits off the toe still traveled down range and spun efficiently. Hard to complain about that.
The tried and true Koehler sole is returns as well. Edison’s versatility is due in part to this dynamic sole. Similar to V-soles from other brands, the Koehler sole features high bounce behind the leading edge and low bounce on the trailing. Need a flop shot with no green to work with? Open the face up. Tight lie in firm conditions? Swing away. The high bounce will help prevent those chunks. Fear no shot with these wedges.
So what’s new? Progressive groove dispersion featuring different grooves as you increase loft. In lower-lofted wedges the grooves are wider and deeper for full shot control. On the flip side, the higher lofts have narrower and closer grooves to put more edges on the ball to deliver more spin. Throw that together with the Pearl Chrome Finish, which is a thicker finish than the other brands means you’ll get more rounds out of these wedges. I found that all of these factors combined for really impressive spin that was fairly easy to generate.
Final Thoughts – Edison 2.0 Wedge
Forgiving and versatile. The Edison Golf 2.0 wedges are built for the average player, but have features even scratch and better golfers can appreciate. CEO Terry Koheler continues to innovate and bring creative solutions to a seemingly unchanged wedge market over the past 30 years. These 2.0 wedges build off of the originals keeping everything that was great and adding even more forgiveness and consistency. There isn’t anything to not like. Coming in a variety of lofts (odd lofts only, but can be bent at request) and right handed only, the 2.0 offers a great wedge that can handle anything you throw at it, even if it’s not your best swing.
