HUNTINGTON BEACH, Calif., – Ernie Els’ strong 2024 season continued on Sunday, winning the American Family Insurance Championship in a playoff for his second straight PGA TOUR Champions victory.
The XXIO Global Ambassador won his fifth PGA Tour Champions title using a mixed bag of XXIO, Srixon Irons, and Cleveland Golf Wedges.
After opening the tournament with a 1-under 71, Els put together a dominant second round 64 to find himself at the top of the leaderboard for the second tournament in a row. Tied for the lead heading into the final round, Els played steady golf in tough conditions carding a 3-under 69 to get to 12-under for the tournament.
With a rally on his back nine, Els made four birdies in a five-hole stretch to get himself into a playoff spot, where he eventually would win the playoff on the first hole. He is the first PGA Tour Champions player to win back-to-back events since his playoff competitor did so last year.
“You’ve got to just play proper golf,” Els said. “I’m striking it good. I’m just hanging in there and trying to get my chances where they come.”
Led by his Srixon ZX7 Mk II Irons, Els hit 80% of greens in regulation on the week to keep himself in contention. With the win, Els moves to third in the Schwab Cup standings.
