Fujikura Fuel Shaft Review

Fujikura Fuel Shaft

The Fujikura Fuel shaft is one of the best workhorse golf shafts I’ve ever experienced. I won’t tell you it’s the flashiest or most exciting graphite shaft in the world, but damnit, if it isn’t one of the most consistent and reliable golf shafts I’ve ever put in a driver.  If you’re looking for great feel and accuracy, the Fuji Fuel is certainly that.

First Impressions

Your first glance at a Fujikura Fuel will catch your eye but won’t overwhelm you with its presence.  The black with dashes of orange give the Fuel enough flash and the naked carbon weave within the graphics makes for an excellent subtle touch.  Other than that, it’s a modest shaft with a tasteful appearance.

How Does it Feel?

I have a tough time describing the Fujikura Fuel’s feel, but in the very best way.  The best way I can think of from a high level is “old faithful.”  There’s just something about this shaft that gives you a great sense of consistency and reliability with ease.  Other shafts I’ve played have felt great or have had more action, but that thoughtless reliability in the Fuel is worth noting.

From a more technical perspective, the Fuel has great feedback in your hands.  The flex profile is very smooth and it has a nice gradual middle kick point.  Throughout the swing, the Fuel holds up very solid but doesn’t give you that stout telephone pole feel.  At impact, you will notice a strong energy release and get that “old faithful” sense I mentioned before.

Consistency is the key with the Fujikura Fuel shaft.  I won’t sit here and try to tell you I haven’t hit other shafts much longer, but I’ve also hit plenty a lot shorter.  Where I had the most success on the course was in my ability to maintain control off the tee and find fairways (ok, fine, kept it well within play) with good distance regularly.  The Fuel is a fairly neutral shaft that gave me an easier higher flight and a mid spin.

I hesitate to throw this statement around, but the Fuel is one of the closest shafts I’ve seen to “one size can fit all” assuming you get flex and weight correctly.  I’m not saying you’ll optimize all of your numbers with it, but I think it is an easy shaft to adapt to and hit well.

Final Thoughts

It’s not often that I’ll make a blind recommendation for a golf shaft, but the Fujikura Fuel is one I consider.  The Fuel’s excellent feel, consistency, and reliability make it a great shaft for a wide range of players.  Don’t get me wrong, you still need to get the appropriate flex and weight, but if you’re looking to put something in your driver or fairway wood to get a little extra boost from the mediocre “made for” that came stock, the Fuel is a great option.
