This won’t be an especially lengthy post, but I felt this series of random encounters were worth sharing. In early December, one of the great modern putter makers, Byron Morgan, sadly passed away. (I wrote about my small story with the man himself here if you’re interested.) Well, one day during my random golf nerd stops around the internet, I happened to stumble across a Byron Morgan putter cover that I was actually pretty familiar with. Given Byron’s recent passing and my weird connection to this particular cover, I knew I had to have it.
The History
It’s no secret that we here at DRH are really good friends with the Scott Readman Concepts crew. If you aren’t familiar with that brand, I’ll give you a quick rundown. They’re based out Bristol, England and are especially known for their premium handmade putter and headcovers. They also make accessories like ball markers, golf bags, and much more. Oh, and let’s not forget their putters. In fact, putters are really the start of the connection to Byron Morgan. When Scott was just starting out in this business, Byron was one of the first to share his infinite knowledge and wisdom with the young up and coming golf craftsman. Throughout the years, the two of them kept in touch across the Atlantic ocean and developed quite a friendship.
At some point in recent years, Byron asked Scott if he would make a handful of putter covers his company, Byron Morgan Designs. I’ll never forget how excited Scott was to get to make some covers for this legend. On one of my last trips over to the UK before the pandemic hit, I saw a putter cover with a familiar “Byron Design” logo. Scott explained to him that this was for a first batch for Byron. Sure enough, I would soon start seeing them pop up in various collections on the web. Scott then asked me, “do you know Byron’s Sally Surfer logo?” Of course I did…
Scott pulls up a file on his computer and it’s a mockup of the Sally Surfer logo on a blade putter cover. He then tells me about a new process they’re working on where they’ll embroider some of the headcover, but will be able to print the graphic directly onto the material for better durability and higher definition. It sounded cool, and I told him I looked forward to seeing the final product some day.
Final Thoughts – My New Byron Morgan Putter Cover
Scott Readman Concepts has a unique shape to their covers that is very distinctive. More often than not, I’ll recognize an SRC cover at just a glance because of this shape and a closer inspection will confirm it. So when I was perusing the internet randomly, I was scrolling along and saw “the shape”. I stopped to look and thought, “oh my god, I know exactly what that is. It’s one of the Sally Surfer covers Scott told me about.” The timing on it was just too crazy and I didn’t even hesitate to make sure I picked up this Byron Morgan putter cover.
This is by no means the only one out there. There were a few different colors made and I believe they were headcover options for new Byron Morgan putter orders. But for me to stumble upon this cover at this point in time was kind of surreal. These covers will only get harder and harder to find as the years roll by. I have so many of SRC’s covers on my shelf, I knew I had to add this one too. This isn’t just any putter cover. It’s from the late Byron Morgan’s company and happens to have been made by some of my best friends in the whole world. While it will likely never see a golf course, I’m so happy to have it.
And like I said about Byron in my other post…
“He was a tremendous talent, wonderful human, and an inspiration to many. His work and his friendship to the golf world will be greatly missed and his legend more than deserves to live on.”
Hi Bill, Thank you for the article. Byron was a wonderful man and a good friend of my husband and I. We will miss him very much. I was looking for another Byron head cover when I came across your post. I’m wondering where I can pick one up for my husband. It would be an honor to have another one. And still beautiful Sally, is always welcome in our cart.
I don’t know other than eBay! There were only so many made, so really, just have to get lucky. Good luck in the search!
