Black Lab Golf Custom BL-2 Putter

Kicking off the putter vault series with my custom Black Lab BL-2 putter seems most appropriate. Chip Usher has been a tremendous friend and supporter for many years now, and his name will pop up throughout this series quite a bit. This specific putter arguably shaped my putter preferences to this day, so let’s start here.

This was my second putter ever from Chip Usher. When I launched “my old site,” I remembered how much I loved working with Chip on a custom putter a couple of years prior. So I reached out to him only to find out that his original putter company C&L putters was no more, but he had recently started a new putter company. He asked me what kind of putter I would want which got us talking about some different ideas. I wanted to do an interpretation of a “different putter maker”. 1) Because I know Chip makes a better putter, and 2) I get this “I’m sticking it to the other guy” mindset that I apparently have a thing for.

Either way, we talked about taking the standard Black Lab BL-2 head shape and shaving the heel down quite a bit. Chip did this by hand and the results were amazing. It was now a “BL-2 Prototype” as opposed to the standard version

Once this “shaved heel” BL-2 started getting some attention on the internet, Chip started receiving requests for the same thing from quite a few customers. This led to the mod being called “the Bushmaster” and history was made. I’ve even seen other peoples’ putters on the internet with my name now stamped on them. That’s weird…

This putter was my consistent gamer for quite awhile and still sees regular use. This is easily one of my top three putters I own.
