Lamkin UTx Grips Review

Lamkin UTx Grips

The Lamkin UTx is a high-performance grip designed to deliver in all weather conditions.  Lamkin’s Tri-Layer Technology and a full-cord weave make the UTx strong in the hands with excellent traction.  Oh, and if we’re counting, the Lamkin UTx has been my go-to grip since its introduction.

The Looks

For all intents and purposes, the look of the Lamkin UTx grip is pretty simple.  You can see evidence of the ACE pattern, “spots” from the cord, and a basic Lamkin logo.  Should you want to be a little more adventurous, you might be able to find the UTx in the old faded red or blue colorways.  Otherwise the UTx comes in black, grey, blue, and red.  To be fair, Lamkin does give the UTx a little pop with a different color butt cap.

Feel

As you can see, the cord of the Lamkin UTx is pretty visible.  I feel it’s important for me to point out that I’ve never been a big fan of corded grips.  Why?  For whatever reason, I have sensitive hands and never got along well with cord.  Unfortunately, I also don’t do well with moisture on my grips so I’m a prime candidate for cord grips!  This is where the Lamkin UTx was a savior.  What I appreciate most about the UTx is that the cord is present enough to give you that great traction, but subtle enough that you don’t realize you’re using a cord grip.  Take note, once the grips start to wear out, you will likely notice the cord more.  And for all you “big cord” fans, a slight run over with sandpaper will do the trick for you.

The Tri-Layer tech Lamkin used on the UTx utilizes three different materials to create that feel.  I already covered the cord but the other two layers are the softer foundation material and firm outer layer.  The softer foundation gives you a strong but comfortable feedback, whereas the firm outer layer dampens vibrations and helps with torsion control.  Overall, I find the UTx to be a “Goldilocks” grip in regards to feel.  Not too hard, not too soft.  Perfect.

On-Course Performance

I just assume that everyone evaluates the performance of their grips differently.  For me, it comes down to the grip not slipping in my hands, regardless of conditions, and shot feedback.  Lamkin‘s UTx grip was the perfect combination of both of these things.  As mentioned before, the traction is great and you won’t be hit over the head with a really rough, cordy feel.  I’m confident in my one connection to the club and just have to worry about swinging away with the UTx.

I like a good grip on the club, but find it pretty meaningless if I don’t feel the shot.  The feedback with the UTx is very precise and caters to touch players.  If you like a grip that significantly dampens your shots, the UTx is likely not for you.  I like the UTx because I want to know when and where I hit bad shots.  If I hit a good shot, there’s zero punishment.  That’s the blend I’m looking for in a grip.

Final Thoughts

I could sit here and summarize all of the features of the Lamkin UTx we just discussed, but I’m not going to.  Instead, I’ll close with why I love this grip.

The UTx is one of those things in golf gear that I just feel good about.  It just is.  It’s right.  The grip feels perfect in my hands and shot response is exactly what I want it to be.  Am I saying the UTx is the best grip of all time and it’s perfect for everyone?  Absolutely not.  But I love it and have sworn by it for a few years now.  Have I used other grips for testing, to save my stock of UTx grips?  Yes, and lots of those grips are also amazing.  Are there plenty of other great grips out there that are worth checking out?  Of course.  At the end of the day though, my go-to grip has been the Lamkin UTx and I don’t see that changing anytime soon.  Of course, as a real gear nerd, I welcome any and all challengers!

  1. This has been my full cord grip of choice (since the Ping legacy grips are hard to come by) since I haven’t played Titleist irons in 15 years. I agree that this is a fantastic grip – even had the boys at Sub70 irons ordered with them (they don’t list them but sourced them from their sister company – Diamond Tour Golf).

I keep worrying this grip is going to be dropped by Lamkin. I’ll be sad the day I can no longer find these (in Black/Grey)

It’s been suggested to me that gold lettering on the top of the UTX grip means that it’s a mid size grip even though standard Lamkin is written underneath. Is this correct?

  3. This winter of 2023, I have finally changed over all my irons to this grip. I tried them out last year on only a few mid irons. Really liked the feel and started to really hit some laser straight iron shots with these grips. Had to change over all my grips since these hand-me-down irons had oversized grips. So far playing these in variable winter golf weather in Cleveland -these work great. Its taken me quite a long time to find this combo grip – tacky and chord- that works great. I Like these best since golf pride discontinued their dual durometer grips. Next is to regrip my driver.
