A Classic Scottish Brand
You’ll be hard-pressed to find many active golf brands, apparel or otherwise, dating back to very beginnings of the modern game. Lyle and Scott, however, goes back to 1874 in a Scottish town called Hawick. With a tradition of premium quality and style, the brand introduced a golf-specific range in the mid 1960s that would reach the closets of many great professionals including multiple Major champions. Here we are in 2021/22 and the Lyle and Scott golf collection is still some of the nicest quality apparel you’ll find in the game.
The Lyle and Scott Golf Collection
Whether you’re a Tour professional, club champion, or a weekend hack that wants to look good while having fun, Lyle and Scott has you covered. Probably best known for their jumpers (sweaters to the North Americans), Lyle and Scott also offers an extensive range of polos, outerwear, and bottoms. While excellent on the course, the Golf Collection is a fun, smart, and comfortable option for everyday life.
As the cooler seasons hit here in the Midwest, the Lyle and Scott outwear options have gotten a lot of use from me. The Golf Gilet (vest) has been a regular for brisk driving range sessions as well as walks around town. This vest has a special PermaLoft thermal that retains body heat as well as a water repellent coating for those misty days. There’s plenty of stretch in the fabric to make a comfortable swing with a full range of motion.
A solid quarter zip or sweater makes nice mid layer to go under the vest, or on its own for some added warmth. Lyle and Scott has a wide range of options often utilizing blends of merino wool and acrylic. This keeps your body at a comfortable temperature and provides enough stretch to swing a club. These classics also look great off the course just as well.
Then of course there’s the classic golf polo. Lyle and Scott has a wide selection ranging from modest basics with a wide color palette to bold styles like the “Eagle Print” polo. The golf range of polos are made of cotton/polyester blends or moisture-wicking cotton. These materials will keep you cool and comfortable on the course while still looking good off the course.
Final Thoughts – Lyle and Scott Golf
Lyle and Scott came on my radar many years ago when my wife was working in “high-end” fashion at a premium retailer. What always appealed to me was the versatility of their pieces that was just as appropriate at work as it was at a nice restaurant. High fashion houses like Christian Dior have relied on Lyle and Scott for a reason throughout its 150 year history, and the golf collection is a true testament to the brand’s quality and versatility. Honestly, it was only recently when I became aware of the Golf Collection and I’m glad I did. I really enjoy Lyle and Scott’s European-inspired style that finds the right combination of staying traditional, yet still delivering a fashionable and bold look. In my mind, this brand screams quality and is everything you can ask for in a golf apparel investment.
(Keep in mind that L&S are a European brand so sizing will run on the smaller side for Americans.)
