Matrix HM3 Black Tie Shaft Review

Matrix HM3 Black Tie Shaft

The Matrix Black Tie shafts are always well regarded for their low launch, low spin and extremely stable characteristics.  I’ve played the shaft over the years to varying success, but when paired with the right swing, the Black Tie is a lethal beast.  In my case, I’ve had success with the Matrix HM3 Black Tie hybrid shaft in recent years.

First Impressions

When you hear “black tie” you more than likely think of fancy parties or dinners, and having to wear a suit with a black tie…like a tuxedo.  Well, the Matrix HM3 Black Tie is exactly what you’d expect the shaft to look like based on its name.  A black base with white graphics, save for a little red, gives you a pretty mean look.

How Does it Feel?

Anything labeled “Matrix Black Tie” is safe to assume is stout in its feel.  Frankly, if you don’t have a faster or more aggressive swing, then you’re likely not going to love the feel of the Black Tie HM3.  The HM3 Black Tie is definitely stiff in the tip and takes some speed to load.  Matrix is known for smoother feeling shafts, but the Black Tie is a bit of an exception.  Across the Matrix lineup, the Black Tie feels exceptionally stout in comparison.

On-Course Performance

If there’s one thing for certain, the Matrix HM3 Black Tie lives up to its low ball machine reputation.  I will often preach that you need to decide what you want a hybrid to do in your bag.  Hybrids are supposed to fill certain distance gaps, but you have to know if you’re looking to get as much distance as possible or if you’re looking for high flying shots with soft descents.  In my case, I want my hybrid to carry long with medium/high height and soft drop.  This is not a typical flight for the Black Tie.  Now, there was a time when I used a 17º hybrid instead of a 5 wood.  For that application, the HM3 Black Tie was excellent.  My shot was a low canon and gave me some good roll to pick up some extra yards.

When you want to hit a lower piercing hybrid that’s going to roll, the  Black Tie shaft is perfect.

Final Thoughts

The Matrix HM3 Black Tie is not going to be for everyone, but the players it is for will love it.  I know that probably sounds extremely obvious, but trust me when I say that you need to have the swing for it.  Regardless, you can expect the HM3 Black Tie to deliver the low bullets you may have always wanted out of a long hybrid.
