Miura Tour Wedge Review

Miura Tour Wedge

Chip Usher of Usher Golf recently sent me my latest Miura treat to try out.  A few weeks ago when I was on the phone with Chip talking about his latest “barn find,” our conversation led to some custom Miura wedges he’s made for me in the past.  This led to Chip mentioning that I really needed to check out the new Miura Tour Wedge if I liked my old ones.  Historically, Miura’s wedge grooves were pressed into the face during the forging process and the spin was fairly neutral.  With the new Tour Wedge, it’s a whole different ball game now – and Chip was right, I really did need to check this wedge out.

If you’re looking for a wedge with incredible feel and elite performance, look no further than the Miura Tour Wedge.  Using the highly-acclaimed Miura forging process, Miura has also utilized CNC milling on the face and grooves for ultimate precision.  Shocking sneak peak for the rest of this review: this wedge is really good.

Miura Tour Wedge 2The Looks

Typically Miura irons are simple, smooth, and somewhat understated…and absolutely perfect.  The new Miura Tour Wedge is no exception.  Following suit with wedge legends of Miura past, the Tour Wedge lets its elegant lines speak for itself.  The back of the club is marked with nothing more than a simple Miura logo.  At the toe you’ll find the loft and that’s it.  Though a risk, I asked Chip for a simple stamping of my initials and the actual loft.  I like how it looks, but I’m willing for purists to be critical of my decision and it would be tough to argue.  The Tour Wedge doesn’t need anything extra on it.

One thing I do want to point out is that the Miura Tour Wedge has a slightly different profile than I’ve seen from previous Miura wedges.  At address, the Tour Wedge has a round-ish pear shape and the toe is closer to stubby than round.  When you look at the club from the back, however, the head seems to have a slightly higher toe.  It’s a great shape behind the ball that’s a bit less traditional, but won’t offend those purists.  I really like what Miura has done here.

How Does it Feel?

Unsurprisingly, the Miura Tour Wedge has an astoundingly pure feel.  Miura’s forging process is unique in the golf world and the end result is a very solid head with an extremely tight grain.  What does that mean?  Basically, Miura conducts an extra forge strike that makes the metal more compact with tighter “voids” in the steel.  This is how they achieve that solid feel and keep the heads consistent.

The perfection and purity comes from the Miura Tour Wedge’s design rather than crazy technology and buzz words.  Precise shaping and weighting give the Tour Wedge impeccable balance that makes the club feel perfect through the ball.  Admittedly, this isn’t the most forgiving wedge of all time, but a striker will love it and the slightly higher center of gravity (CG) will be a pleasant treat for them.  This effect is achieved by what Miura calls their first “hollow back shape.”

Warning, I’m about to use my least favorite golfism here so brace yourself now.  The Miura Tour Wedge feels like absolute butter through the turf.  There’s no other way to explain it.  The versatile “C-Grind-esque” sole smoothly cuts through the turf and feels so clean at impact.

How Does it Sound?

If you’ve had other Miura wedges before, I would say the Tour Wedge sound is a hair softer than previous models.  That said, there is a range of tones depending on what type of shot you hit.  A relatively cleanly picked ball will give you a tight “flick” from the turf with a solid “click” off the face.  If you’re flopping over a bunker and taking a chunk of turf, the Tour Wedge has a pronounced thump that seems to almost drown out that click sound.  Fuller swings are similar in terms of turf interaction (maybe a little more crisp), but the sound off the face is more of a “whap” at impact.  In a nuthsell, the Miura Tour Wedge sounds every bit of 100% forged when you’re hitting it well.

On-Course Performance

In terms of basic wedge performance, the Miura Tour Wedge delivers just how you’d expect from a premium Tour-inspired wedge.  The sole grind and head shape are very versatile allowing you to hit all sorts of chips, pitches, lobs, and flops.  Good wedge players are going to be magicians from 100 yards in with this wedge.

The biggest upgrade in the Miura Tour Wedge comes courtesy of its new grooves.  As mentioned earlier, the grooves have historically been pressed into the face during the forging process.  With the new Tour Wedge, Miura CNC milled the grooves into the face instead.  This allowed Miura to cut the grooves with more precision and a little extra bite.  The end result is the most spin Miura’s had in a modern wedge for better control on the greens.  I’m not a big wedge spinner and even I was seeing wedge shots of all varieties grab and bite.

Final Thoughts

What I love most about new Miura clubs is that they generally don’t try to wow you with a bunch of fancy new technology and innovations.  They wow you by making great designs with perfect execution that feel amazing and just flat out perform.  This is the perfect way to look at the Miura Tour Wedge.  There are key design points and all, but the wedge itself is fairly simple and unassuming.  Though simple, the Tour Wedge is in an elite class.  A class so elite that you start to think “this might be what perfection feels like.”  Just make sure your wedge needs are a good match for the Tour Wedge.  If they are…you’re in for quite a treat.  Just as Chip promised me.
