Mizuno MP-18 MB Irons
The MP-18 MB are Mizuno’s newest “blades” in their classic MP family. Known for their small club heads, sleek appearance, and buttery feel, the MP line is geared towards lower handicap players who are looking for more “playability” from their irons.
The Looks
The first thought I had when I saw the Mizuno MP-18 MB was “Wow, those things are PRETTY.” Mizuno has always made good looking clubs, and these are no different. They have the classic muscle back look, in a matte chrome finish. The toplines are very thin and the soles are narrow, as expected with a blade. While many have complained that the pitching wedge and short irons in Mizuno’s latest players clubs are too large, the MP-18 have done a great job in starting small, and making the heads progressively larger. In short, these are some of the best looking irons I have seen in a long time.
How Does it Feel?
If you’re a golfer, you’ve probably heard the saying “nothing feels like a Mizuno“. Mizuno is most known for that “buttery” soft feel in their blades, and these MP-18 MB are no exception. I hit literally one ball with these clubs and said “man I have to get these.” They’re the best feeling clubs I have hit and they went straight in the bag. Center strikes feel soft on the hands, yet solid. When you miss the center of the club face, however, they definitely let you know.
As with most blades, the MP-18 MB cut through the turf like knives, and are made to pick the ball. The small soles glide through the grass for divots. If you hit a fraction behind the ball, it’s going to punish you. But hey, these are made for better players, right?
How Does it Sound?
The Mizuno MP-18 MB sound about as good as they feel. If you hit them on the sweet spot, the sound matches the feel of the club. It has that solid clicking you expect from a blade, without sounding like you’re hitting rocks off of the face. Off center hits, or shots hit thin, have a much more noticeable clicking sound where it will sound like you’re cracking rocks, to go along with that sting in the hands.
On-Course Performance
I’m not going to sugar coat it: the Mizuno MP-18 MB are made for players. Off center shots die in the air, especially ones off of the heel. If you hit behind the ball, you will be punished. But that’s all worth it for that feel when you flush one. The distance is stellar on solidly struck shots, and the ball flies high and lands soft. It’s very easy to work the ball left or right, and or flight them high or low. If you have the ball striking to play blades, you won’t find many out there that will out-perform these bad boys.
Final Thoughts
If you’re in the market for some player’s clubs with the game for blades, look no further than the Mizuno MP-18 MB. Mizuno has made THE best looking player’s clubs on the market with the latest in the MP lineup, and it has the performance and feel you expect with a Mizuno. If you want some new clubs this year and are ready to make the jump to a player’s club, make sure you try the Mizuno MP-18s.
